Plenty of opportunity to make the most of our alone time.

I stop at the fridge on my way out of the kitchen to grab the whipped cream and leftover bowl of strawberries from Dominic’s smash cake.

It’s going to be a good afternoon.

* * *

Delphine rolls over onto her back by the time I’m through with her. A breathless smile’s on her face, her head of zigzag curls fanned out around her on the pillow. “You do too damn much, Jon.”

I chuckle and crawl up her body ’til I’m reaching her lips for a quick kiss. “It’s not my fault you’re irresistible.”

“Irresistible? I was in a robe and a nursing bra.”

My brows raise as I hover over her. “You making my case or yours, Phi? Because, I’ll tell you right now, it sounds a lot more like you’re arguing inmyfavor.”

“We have the mess in the kitchen to think about.” She reaches up to trace her fingers along my bearded jawline. Her touch is soft and affectionate, revealing she’s as into our bed games as I am, even if she pretends she’s all about responsibilities.

I nip at her fingers to her surprised squeal of laughter. “Way ahead of you. I already texted Stitches to have a couple of the security guys scrub the kitchen clean. They’re probably already done.”

“But Dom—”

“Still asleep. Look at our baby boy on the monitor.” I reach for the baby monitor on our nightstand.

It’s true that our boy is peacefully dozing in his crib. His favorite blue teddy bear lays beside him like a second baby. The two still aren’t that different in size.

Delphine’s smile only brightens, which only makes it that much more beautiful. “You’ve already thought of everything.”

“If it means alone time for us.” I lean closer to kiss along her neck and shoulder. My hands freely caress her naked curves. “We should take Dominic to the beach when he wakes up.”

“He’ll love the sand.”

“It’ll be a nice family outing. A good way to end his first birthday.”

Her smile softens. “Baby’s first beach trip.”

“He’ll never remember, but we will.”

“You’re such a good father. I love seeing you with him.”

In the past I would’ve thought it was impossible to feel like I do—the intense happiness and deep care that exist inside me where before it was nothing but apathy and a thirst for revenge. I didn’t care whether I lived or died.

These days, I live to be the husband and father I am. It’s a happy ending I never thought I deserved.

I stroke Delphine’s cheek and stare fondly in her eyes, enjoying the moment for what it is. Another intimate moment in bed after lovemaking as we discuss our lives and think about the future. If it could always be like this, I’d truly be the luckiest man to ever walk the planet.

“I’m a good father because my wife is an even better mother,” I tell her. “You make this easy, Phi. You believe in me and make me want to be the things you deserve. You always have. Even when I didn’t realize that was happening.”

“Like when we were teenagers.” She lets a small giggle leave her.

I nod. “Like when we were teenagers, and I put in effort on our first date.”

“I thought it was a revenge ploy?”

The glint in her toffee-brown eyes tells me all I need to know—she’s giving me a hard time for my past confession. I had once told her all about my plans to seek revenge by using her. But it’s become a joke between us because of how badly I failed. Instead of getting revenge, I became obsessed and fell in love with her.

“Again, it’s not my fault you were too damn irresistible,” I reply, then nip at her neck. “See how we’ve circled back, Phi? The moral of the story is I can’t resist you no matter how hard I try.”

The humor on her face melts into a softer, more sentimental expression. “Would I still be irresistible if I were pregnant?”
