She looks down at the hand that’s not clutching mine. A large scar heals across the palm of her hand. A severe gash that I caused at the height of our escape plan. We had murdered my father and dismembered the bodies as time dwindled.

I knew it was inevitable the police would trace what was happening back to me… and Lyra.

So I killed her.

I cut her with my knife. I did so using my surgical expertise, with great care, and let her blood drip onto the floor.

We staged a struggle. I even left the murder weapon with my prints and her blood.

Her belongings were left untouched in her apartment. Her phone abandoned. All means of communication cut between her and the few people who knew her.

As far as the police are concerned, her body is still missing, like many of my other victims. But Lyra Hendrix as the world knew her is dead.

It’s a sacrifice that’s asked a lot of her—she didn’t get to say goodbye to her best friend, Imani, and she had to leave her life behind on the spot. She’s been forced to take on a new identity much in the same manner I have.

Sacrifices she’s said she’s willing to make.

“I wonder if they’ll ever stop looking,” she says, peering out the window. We’re soaring among the morning clouds, on a fast track to our next destination. “I wonder what everyone thinks.”

“I can tell you that. The people in my world have moved on. They have returned to their vapid conversations and existence without a single care… except for when they were photographed mourning at my father’s funeral. The others who knew you, I’m afraid are likely the same. Perhaps except for your friend. The city may be in a panic over a loose serial killer, but make no mistake, the world at large has moved on. That is human nature. People will continue living their lives.”

“And so will we.” A small smile lights up her face.

I drop a kiss onto her lips, unable to resist. “And so will we… as it should be.”

“I love you, Kaden.”

I stroke my fingers along the inside of her forearm, where her special piano keys tattoo is inked onto her skin. My deep affection for Lyra may be what most would call unhealthy but it’s what a man like me is capable of.

A love that’s dark and twisted; a love that’s violent and obsessive but no less deep in its own unique way. It’s something no one else understands and no one else needs to understand.

“I love you too, little lamb.”

THE END… FOR NOW.
