"Of course, Mother. Come on in, Sara," I invited and plastered a smile on my face.

"And this," Ishtar turned by the still open door to drag in Abaddon's bride, the one who had distracted Balaam for him so he could kill him. My blood turned to ice. This wasn't good. This girl had bonded with Abaddon and would complicate things. I would have to treat her like a spy. "Is Judith. I want you to keep her with you until your father—"

"Behlial is not my father," I protested more out of habit than hate right then.

She ignored the interruption. "Decides what to do with Abaddon."

"Welcome to my harem," I grinned sardonically and the irony of me having a harem and not being interested in it whatsoever wasn't lost on me.

"You won't hurt them and will treat them nicely and respectfully." Ishtar raised a finger.

I grinned. No promise to her had ever been this easy. "I swear on my life."

An idea hit me. "I do need blood though, Mother. If you would stay with my… brides, I will return to Adama for a while and satiate my desires… so I won't pose any danger to these fair maidens."

Ishtar's eyes narrowed; she was just as aware as I that there were plenty of Tainted aboard the ship who would fully satiate my desires, as well as any one of my brides in my new harem were supposed to. There was no reason to go to Adama other than to fill my bloodlust, something she knew wasn't a true part of my nature, not like it had been for Nergal or Balaam.

"This is my first and only time on this planet, and I fully intend to… satiate my curiosity," I added for good measure.

A sad expression crossed her features and shame welled up inside me for deceiving her, for making the one person who had always stuck up for me, who had tried with all her might to form me into adecentDaemon, think badly of me.

It had to be done though, in order to escape my brides and to fulfill my promise to Fay. This would be the best excuse to take her back to Adama to find her parents.

"As you wish." She inclined her head but when I moved past her, her long, noble fingers encircled my wrist. "Azazel."

I turned to look down at her beloved face.

"Be merciful," she pleaded.

"I won't harm anybody who doesn't have it coming," I promised and was grateful for this easy oath as well.

Ihatednotknowingwhere he was and with whom. What if this Nayphyllym bride turned his head like she was supposed to? What if he decided it would be easier to stay with her than me?

As exasperating as these thoughts were, they were also dismaying, because I didn't simply fear losing the man I was beginning to care for and crave, but he was also the only one who could keep me safe, who could take me to my parents.

In a straight line, I walked from the window to the door and back again, only to repeat the process over. I was agitated. Never in my life had I felt this helpless, this confused and, yes, scared. After all, I was aboard an alien spaceship filled with bloodsucking vampires who, from what I gathered, salivated over the chance to suck a Nayphyllym dry. Even though Azazel had been different, I remembered the vampire who had first attacked me with a shudder. Instinctively I knew he would have killed me and not given it a second thought.

Oh, and not to mention that I was an alien as well. A Nayphyllym. Whoever or whatever they were.

No, I couldn't allow myself to think about it that way. No matter what kind of blood flowed in my body, I was as much a human as every other race on Earth. Yes, that was it. I was just another race. Not an alien. My ancestors came to Earth thousands of years ago, mixed with the humans, and that made me as much of a human as them.

But your blood has been kept pure, a voice whispered, you are not a Tainted, you are not a human. I told that voice to shut up. I was not an alien. I was not!

Satisfied I clearedthatup, I continued my pacing, hoping my mom and dad were safe and hoping Azazel wouldn't fall for the wiles of this… Nayphyllymbride.

What were they doing? Sitting happily around a large table, staring into each other's eyes, besotted with having…Stop it, Fay, stop it.

With a sigh, I did just that. I stopped in the middle of the floor and threw my arms up in the air. Coincidentally, I had stopped right in front of the bathroom door, so I decided to take a shower and get dressed. At least that would keep me busy for a while.

Just like I hoped, the shower distracted me and made me feel a bit better. But it turned out that getting dressed was a bit more complicated. All of Azazel's clothing was too big for me unless I wanted to make do with one of his shirts.

After some investigating of the hidden drawers inside the wall, I did find a variety of dresses for myself though. Except, they were all black. Did the Daemons not use any other color besides black?

Then again, they were on a quest of the damned, so that kind of made sense.

I settled on a black dress that was tight, but with split seams running down my leg from just above mid-thigh. It would give me plenty of room to run or do whatever I needed with my legs, so I figured I could probably even fight in it.

Which brought me to another idea to keep my spirits up and to distract my thoughts from a certain alien. Slowly at first, I moved through several warm-up exercises one of my martial arts trainers had shown me before I moved more aggressively. Yes, the dress held up, I noted with satisfaction.
