Okay?

I shook my head, doubting I would ever be okay again even if it hadn't been for a raging alien attack. Who, according to Alex, weren't here for the first time.So this is what Mom and Dad always feared coming, the thought was followed by an avalanche of others and quickly swallowed up.

Focus, I told myself, focus, there are a lot more important things to discuss besides my parents and my supposed partnership with Alex.

I couldn't let it go though. "So you and me…?"

He nodded. "Are supposed to have two children."

"How do they ensure it's a boy and a girl? I mean what if its—"

"It doesn't happen. It's always a boy followed by a girl."

"And your sister?"

"I never met her. She was raised by nannies just like me."

OMG, how sad is that?

"Did you try?"

He shook his head. The surrealism of us standing here debating our fucked-up families while listening to distant gunfire wasn't lost on me. Still, I couldn't stop discussing this.

"When your parents made it clear they wanted out, Homer," he waved me off before I interrupted him, "sent me after you, hoping that I might be able to talkyouinto being part of the group when the time came."

"So our date…"

He looked sheepish. "Was an ill-timed attempt. You aren't ready."

"Ready for what?"

He looked at the ground and shuffled his foot back and forward, mumbling so low I hardly heard him. "Ready to have sex with anybody butthem."

"Them?" When he didn't elaborate, I blanched. "The gargoyles?"

He shrugged. "I don't know. Seven Nayphyllym females are meant forthem, which thankfully you aren't part of, yet your body still won't let you partner with anybody butthemuntil you turn twenty-six, then you will be ready to…"

When he didn't finish, I did. "Breed with you," I sniped, disgusted.

His head lowered even more. "Fay…"

Whatever he was going to say was lost by a shrill scream as a man tackled me to the ground.

Mybloodrushedinmy ears and my vision turned red the moment I entered the alley.

The noble who had been following the same scent as me pinned a female under his unforgiving body. She squirmed and fought to no avail. Her little fists drummed against his chest and her legs kicked out, but she might as well have fought against an immovable mountain. Even if her Nayphyllym blood was stronger than the Adama in her, here on their home planet, she was just as ineffective against a Daemon as an Adama. Once she set foot on theAsphodel,it would be different, but for now, she was as impotent against us as the indigenous population.

An Adama, a male, who must have been pushed aside during the initial attack, rallied himself and leveled a gun straight against the noble's head. I admired his valiant effort, but it would be for naught. Nothing but mortferrym would harm us.

The noble ignored the male, even when he pulled the trigger and a loud bang reverberated through the alley. His hands mercilessly pulled the female's hair back, forcing her to crane her neck and to expose a slender white neck.

The scent of her washed through me even stronger this close. Nothing compared to it, and I realized this female was a pure Nayphyllym. I didn't question where she came from or why she was unprotected, but she wasn't for the noble. How dare he lay his hands on her?

Behlial told us that they used to hunt the Nayphyllym down in the old days, until they found the required seven maidens, but during his last visit, he struck a deal with the keeper of the Nayphyllym. In return for the keeper readying seven maidens when the time came, Behlial would not attack Adama.

Behlial being Behlial had attacked, of course, and broken his word by justifying that the Adamas attacked him. That aside though, the Nayphyllym maidens should have been ready at the appointed location, not out here, unprotected. They were far too valuable to be accosted by the likes of these nobles.

Who, by the way, should have captured her and brought her aboard theAsphodel, unharmed, not attacked her, ready to satiate his thirst.
