"But I'm not any male," I corrected, wanting to see her reaction.

"To me you are."

"I'm a warlord, your warlord," I said, slightly affronted. And then, seeing that this conversation wasn't going anywhere, I asked, "What's your name?"

"Alahna," she replied in her melodic voice that turned me on even more for her.

"Alahna," I repeated, just so I could roll her name over my tongue.

"What do I call you?" she demanded, amusing me with her fire.

"Lord, master, Warlord, sir, Brogan, take your pick," I offered.

She nodded but didn't say anything, amusing me further. She was a mix of obstinacy, honesty, exasperation, and something utterly different from the kallinies I usually chose to take to my room, who were more pliant and agreeable than her. She intrigued me, though, more than any kallini I had ever met.

Broganconfusedme.Oneminute he slapped my ass so hard it still stung, and the next he kissed me, making my knees go weak and leaving me wanting more.

In hindsight, it might not have been the smartest move on my part to bite him so hard when I did, especially not in front of his warriors and court, but it had been an automatic reaction. Nobody had ever kissed me before, most certainly not like that.

Given what I had heard about the warlords, he could have probably killed me on the spot for injuring him and nobody would have said a word. That he didn't, made me anticipate the worst when he carried me like a sack of grain up to his chambers. Where, to my surprise, he hadn't done more than kiss me again and touch me in the gentlest way—a way that, combined with the two kisses he had stolen so far, made me want more.

I was grateful for the liquor he gave me. The burning sensation down my throat and inside my belly helped ground me again.

He was a confusing man. One second he pawed me and the next he asked about Samju.

Like now, when he asked, "So you are a horse handler?"

Afraid my voice would betray my confused state of mind, I only nodded. But he didn't give up. "I never heard of a kallini being a horse handler; it must be different with the humans, kar?"

I cleared my throat. "No, not really. We don't have female horse handlers either, but my father taught me. He needed help, and it was just him and me." I raised my chin to add, "And he said I'm a damn good one."

"I believe you." He nodded. "The question still is what to do with you?"

Before I could lose my nerve, I blurted out, "Let me help with your horses."

He stared at me thoughtfully, rubbing his chin. The urge to shift my weight from one foot to the other with impatience was great, but I forced myself to stand perfectly still, aware that I was still half-naked.

"If I do that, what will you give me in return?" he asked after the silence stretched on.

I bit my tongue before I cried outanything. "What do you want?"

He pretended to think about it, and I knew he pretended because his eyes sparkled mischievously. "I want you to stay by my side."

"What else?" I asked with a tightening throat.

"You will help me when I need it."

"Help with what?" I checked suspiciously.

"You'll assist me with my bath, massage my back," he stated.

I can do that, I thought bravely, but swallowed a lump down at the thought of touching his muscled back, his skin, which for some reason didn't sound appalling to me.

"And you will let me kiss you when I want."

"Kiss?"

He nodded. "Kar, just a kiss… unless you ask me for more."
