Lily dashed out of the room. Izzy turned to me. “Well?”

“What?”

“Did you hire the nanny?” she asked.

“Not officially,” I said. “I’m taking Lily to meet her on Saturday. She wants to make sure they are a good fit.”

“Since when did that matter?” Izzy scoffed. “You’re paying her to make it fit.”

“No, I want to make sure Lily likes her. This nanny is a little different than others we’ve had. I want to make sure Lily is cool with it.”

“Different?” Izzy asked.

I grinned. “When you meet her, you’ll see.”

“Now, I’m intrigued.”

“You should be.” I laughed. “It’s going to be a good fit.”

ChapterSix

Deanna

The man did something to me I couldn’t quite explain. I couldn’t crush on the guy. That was wrong. He was likely going to be my boss. There was something about him that very literally tickled something inside me. My belly felt weird after I left the coffee shop. Like I wanted to spend more time with him. I wanted to know all there was to know about him.

I was not used to actually having good things fall into my lap. Part of me was worried I might be getting my hopes up high for nothing. If something sounded too good to be true, it usually was. Life had been a cruel teacher. Things like landing a job that paid more than I made in four years was not in the cards for me. Those things were reserved for lucky people. The only luck I had was the bad kind. The really bad kind.

By the time I got home, my curiosity got the best of me. I needed to know what kind of situation I was getting myself into. Maybe the dude was a freak. There might be a very good reason nannies continuously quit on him. Plus, I was hoping I could find out something about his wife or ex-wife. Just because he didn’t mention her didn’t mean she wasn’t in the picture. She might travel a lot. Maybe she was a celebrity and he was in charge of the day-to-day stuff.

I didn’t like the idea of snooping or stalking, but I could chalk it up to due diligence. I couldn’t go to work for someone I didn’t know. I was going to be in his house, taking care of his kid. If he had a dungeon in the basement, it was something I should know. If he was violent or a creeper, I needed to know.

I pulled out my laptop that was old, but still functional. I wasn’t going to be playing any games on the thing, but I could get on Amazon. I Googled his name. The first listing was his business. I quickly read the professional bio. He actually worked on the MIT campus. I didn’t understand half of what I read but it looked cool.

I clicked on another link and it was pretty much the same fluff. It was like the man was a robot. He was the face of the company and that was it. “Where’s the dirt?” I asked. “Everyone has something.”

I clicked on another link and finally got a little more information. “Holy shit,” I breathed when I saw his net worth. No wonder he was willing to pay me so much money. It was a drop in the bucket for him. He was stupid rich. He was only thirty-six. He looked younger but with his wealth, I would have thought he was older.

I still could find no information about his wife or ex-wife. I combed through the gossip pages in search of a picture of him out and about with a woman. There were a few photos of him at black-tie charity events, but he was always alone.

“Oh shit,” I murmured when a thought popped into my mind.

He was probably gay. The daughter was his cover. I dismissed the idea as quickly as it popped into my head. I had a pretty good radar for that kind of thing. He did not trip my gaydar. There was no way he was gay. He was straight, which meant he was probably one of those guys who believed in being a bachelor for now and forever.

My investigation turned up nothing. Nothing that explained why he would be willing to take a chance on me. Then again, he didn’t realize he was taking a chance. He thought I had experience as a nanny. He checked out my references. Which reminded me, I needed to talk to Colleen and tell her about my interview.

“How did it go?” she asked.

“Good,” I said. “Really good. I have the job if his daughter likes me.”

“Of course, she’s going to like you,” Colleen said. “Why wouldn’t she?”

“I don’t know, because I probably don’t look like her other nannies?. She’s rich. He’s rich. I’m not exactly the rich type. I don’t know all the right things to say. I don’t know the right manners.”

“You’re not exactly a pig being let into the house.” She laughed. “I’m sure you’ll do fine. Just be you. Kids love you. You’re the one who always wins over the bratty kids at work. You know exactly what to say and do to make them behave. They love you. I’m sure this kid is going to like you as well.”

“I hope so,” I said. “I really want the job. That résumé you put together and the beautiful reference have pretty much made me a shoe-in.”

“Is he nice?” she asked.
