“Are you trying to get me drunk?” She giggled.

“No, but after I roll around in the mud, I like to have a few drinks,” I said.

“Oh, do you roll around in the mud a lot?” she teased.

“All the time.” I shrugged. “All the time.”

“Liar.” She laughed.

“I’m going to have another drink,” I said and moved to pour another glass for myself.

“Okay, fine,” she said with an exaggerated sigh. “I guess if you’re going to have one, I’ll have one.”

I mixed up another martini and filled her glass. I carried my drink back to the sofa and sat down.

“So, is your tech in hospitals and stuff?” she asked.

“A few facilities use it,” I told her. “It’s all pretty new. There have been a lot of scandals surrounding this kind of tech. Not everyone is ready to believe it’s possible. My job is to prove that it is. Cam and Izzy are working to fine-tune the tech. We’re on the right path. We’ll get there.”

“Do you have competition?” she asked. “I would think it’s a big deal. Everyone is going to want to be a part of this. It’s going to be a huge money-maker. How do you know you’re going to win the race?”

“We’ve put patents on our tech,” I told her. “Everyone wants to find the magic solution to detecting genetic illnesses. I think there are a lot of different ways to get there. I don’t care if we’re first, but Cam’s hard work deserves to be recognized for being at the cutting edge.”

She took a sip of her martini and leaned back on the sofa, her eyes fixed on me. “It sounds like you’re really passionate about your work. I like that.”

I chuckled. “I’m interested in doing what I can to help people out. I hope it can improve people’s lives.”

“Mm-hmm,” she murmured. “How do you unwind after a long day of work?”

I raised an eyebrow at her. “Are you implying that I need to unwind?”

She laughed. “No, no. I’m just asking.”

“You’re looking at it,” I said. “I unwind and usually watch a game.”

“A game?”

I reached for the remote. “Whatever’s on. I think the Celtics were on earlier. Do you watch basketball?”

She shrugged. “Sometimes. I don’t really get to watch TV. Most of the sports stuff are all on cable, which I don’t have.”

“Do you mind if I check and see how it went?”

“No,” she answered. “Actually, I think it’s stopped raining. I should go home.”

“You can’t go home.”

“Excuse me?” she asked.

“You’ve been drinking,” I reminded her. “There’s no reason you can’t stay. You’ve got a comfy bed. Just think, you can sleep in tomorrow. You don’t have to get up early to come over.”

“Very true.” She smiled.

I turned on the game to watch the highlights. I wasn’t a big sports fan, but I liked to keep up on the local teams. As the game played on, I couldn’t help but notice her gaze wandering over to me. Her eyes were full of desire and her lips were slightly parted.

I reached for her foot.

“What are you doing?” she asked.
