Dee smiled. “Sure, we can do that,” she answered.

Lily squealed with delight, and even Dee seemed to relax a little. Maybe a day at the zoo was just what we all needed.

Our food arrived, and we dug in, enjoying the simple pleasure of a good meal and each other’s company.

The steak was cooked to perfection, and Dee savored each bite. Lily, meanwhile, attacked her chicken fingers with gusto, declaring them the best she’d ever had.

As we ate, the conversation flowed easily. We talked about school and work, about our hopes and dreams. For a moment, it was easy to forget the world outside, with all its dangers and uncertainties.

But eventually, the meal came to an end, and we gathered our things to leave. The sun had set by the time we stepped outside, and the air was chilly. I wrapped my arms around Dee and Lily, trying to shield them from the cold.

As we made our way back to the car, I couldn’t help but feel like we had been through the fire. The three of us came through it and I knew I felt stronger for it. I hoped Dee did as well.

I opened the car door for Lily in the back and Dee in the front. I was tempted to kiss her, but not in front of Lily. Not yet. We drove back to the house in silence, the hum of the car filling the air. I stole glances at Dee, wondering what was going through her mind. Was she thinking what I was thinking? Was I a cad for thinking about sex?

When we got home, Dee put Lily in the bath while I checked email. It was all a very normal evening. Dee and I both tucked Lily into bed.

“Goodnight,” I said to Lily.

“Goodnight, Dad,” she said with a yawn.

As we walked out of her room, Dee grabbed my hand and pulled me into the guest bedroom, closing the door behind us. Her eyes were filled with a raw intensity, a hunger that I had only seen once before. It was the night we first got together. For a long time, we just kissed, our bodies pressed together in a desperate embrace.

“I should let you get some sleep,” I murmured. “I don’t know if this is a good idea with our plans to go to the zoo tomorrow.”

“I’m fine,” she said. “Remember, I got a clean bill of health.”

“I don’t want to hurt you,” I said. “Right now, I feel like a raging stallion.”

She opened the bedroom door and took my hand, leading me out of the room and down the hall to my room. “I’m ready to be ravaged. I’m good. I feel good. I want you to make me feel even better.”

“Dee,” I groaned. “I don’t think you understand just how much I want you.”

“I think I do understand.” She smiled.

I watched her walk to the flameless candles she claimed I needed. I thought they were a little silly in a man’s room, but I could certainly see the advantage now. She turned them on before walking back to me and shutting off the light.

“Don’t make me jump you,” she whispered.

ChapterTwenty-Eight

Deanna

My ribs were a little tender, but there were plenty of ways we could have sex without him hurting my bruised ribs. I didn’t think I could go another day sleeping under the same roof with him without touching him. The man handled me like I was a fragile egg. I had never been fragile in my life and I wasn’t about to start now.

“Show me you want me,” I told him, tracing my fingertip down his chest.

“I do want you,” he groaned.

“Do you?” I asked.

“I have to be careful,” he said. “You’re hurt.”

“I’m not hurt,” I insisted. “The accident was over two weeks ago. I’m good. I need you.”

He groaned again, dropping his forehead to mine. “I’m so hard for you. My balls ache.”

I reached down to cup him through his slacks. “I know how to cure that ache.”
