“I thought they were building a Gaylord.”

“I thought it was a prison.”

“Okay,” Kira clipped to the last guy who interrupted. “What are you doing here, PJ? You’re not on Homecoming Committee.”

He shrugged as he adjusted the basketball under his arm. “I was playing hoops and you guys ran in so I joined. Seemed the thing to do. Go with the flow. This is exciting. I’m in.”

She continued to half frown, half glare at him before rolling her eyes. “Whatever. Fine. If you breathe a word of this to anyone, I’ll murder you in your sleep. I know where you live.”

He’d been pulling out his phone, then froze at her threat.

“Anywho!” She clapped her hands. “Here’s the plan. We need a leader from each subcommittee, and you’re going to come over with me today. We’re going to walk through the hotel—” She paused, her mouth flattening as a hand shot up. “What, Brittany?”

The hand went down. “So, are we not going to talk about how they were building a Chelton Hotel so close to us and we didn’t know? I mean, how lit is that?”

A few others jumped in, all excited as well.

“I mean, it is thirty minutes away.” Kira rolled her eyes. “But yes, yes. It’s very cool. That hotel franchise is the beyond of beyond of hotels, but that was the whole point. They built it, and now they want to announce their presence at our Homecoming. That’s the beyondest of beyond. Oh, and they’re going to have a photographer there too.”

“Whoa,” Brittany breathed. “That’s out of this galaxy beyond.”

“So lit.” PJ was nodding.

“Shut it, PJ. You’re not even supposed to be here.”

He wasn’t fazed, a lazy grin spreading over his face. “But how lucky am I, huh?” The sarcasm was noted, making the others laugh.

“Okay,” Kira was back to snapping. “Listen up. Everything is switching over there. Coronation is going to happen during the game, but we’ll do another royalty introduction at the hotel. The dance will be there. We’ll open up a penthouse suite for the after-party.”

PJ asked, “Are we in the presidential suite? I heard they have those too.”

“No. Just one of the penthouse suites.”

“Why not the presidential one?”

“Are you serious with this?”

He smirked. “Kinda. It’s fun to get you riled up.”

A few girls snickered, and he shot them a cool and cocky look.

“Okay. So, are we good on the plan?”

“Wait.” Another girl shot her hand up. “Dragon Abyss is thirty minutes to the coast. Do we have organized rides there or—”

Kira’s mouth was flat again. “It’s the same thing you were already planning. Do your own rides.”

“But some people have rides for here, not for there. What about those people?”

“Yeah.” PJ joined in. “We should plan something for everyone. Maybe like a bus service? That’s a great idea.”

Kira clipped out, “You want to offer a bus service to students when you know we’re all going to be drinking?”

PJ gave her a sly grin. “This is a student activity. No alcohol should be provided.”

She rolled her eyes again.

“Don’t worry, Kirakins. My uncle has a party bus. I’ll talk to him, see if he can help us out.”

“Don’t call me that, and you need to get that approved by Mrs. Charlotte and Mr. Karpoti.”

“They both love me. It’ll be fine.”

“Whatever. Fine. Okay, other business is permission slips. When the announcement comes out on Monday, each of you are going to give out permission slips to everyone going to the dance. They can’t attend if they haven’t gotten their slip signed.”

“You know there are some students who won’t get their slips signed. Their parents only let them attend activities on campus. That’s not cool for them.”

Kira’s response was to lift a shoulder. “I’m sure they’ll figure it out.”

I frowned. That wasn’t right. “Wait. Are you serious?” All eyes went to me, including Kira’s who was giving me a meaningful glare, which I was ignoring. “You can’t do that. You’re separating the kids with privilege and the ones without. That’s total bullshit.”

Someone gasped. I didn’t look to see who it was.

“Are you serious, Miss I’m Dating—”

I didn’t know what she was going to say or what she actually knew, but I raised my voice, “You won’t go there.”

Another couple of girls gasped.

“Are we going to get a cat fight? ’Cause I’m down.” PJ shifted in the crowd, coming to stand by me. He draped an arm over my shoulders, ignoring my tension. “Also, Kirakins, if a mutiny is happening, I’m with the Maroney triplets’ cousin.” There was more shifting in the group, more lining up on my side and it was evident Kira would lose some standing if she kept pushing back.

She opened her mouth, but held it until she seemed to surrender. “We’ll get it sanctioned. Somehow.”

That only meant she wasn’t giving up the Chelton Hotel and already knew a way around it so all students could attend. She would’ve been fine letting those students not attend because of their homelife.
