I groaned, finishing my makeup at my desk. I liked to do it here instead of the bathroom. I had a better setup, but I’d go in there to finish my hair.

I shook my head. “He’s such an ass.”

“Yeah, but he’s an ass that cares, and girl, I’m telling you I have never seen Scout talk like that to anyone. I didn’t know he had that in him. He’s always shut down. That was eye-opening. He’s let you in. That’s not something to dismiss. Kira would be eating her underwear in a fit of jealousy if she’d glimpsed even ten seconds of that conversation down there.”

“He makes me so mad.”

“Well, he shouldn’t. That was hot. Him. Hot. You should fuck him.”

I pressed my lips together.

She groaned, lying on my bed. “Man! You don’t understand. That guy—he’s not let anyone see into him. How he was down there? Just now? That was worth all the crushes the girls in school have on him. So totally worth it.”

“I’m kinda more interested in you and Kunz.” I eyed her over the makeup mirror.

She paused and then cursed. “Kunz and I are done. For the last time. If I get lonely, I’ll find someone to scratch that itch.”

“I’m sorry.”

She sat up, shrugging, but she couldn’t mask the sadness in her face. “I kinda want to drink a shit ton of wine, go to a football game, and then party it out of me tonight. You game?”

I smiled. “Totally game.”

Scout was gone when we went downstairs, so I quickly finished eating and filled two thermoses. One with wine for Theresa and something stronger for mine. After that, a car swung in, and I met PJ for the first time.

We were off to the football game.

Clint’s eyes almost bulged out of his head when he saw me. “You’re wearing that? That?” He looked down at his outfit, which was a Pine River sweatshirt and jeans.

But he was a guy. He could wear almost anything, and it had no bearing on his social status.

“I think you look great.” PJ’s tongue was almost out of his mouth.

Clint rounded on him. “My cousin, dude. Like my sister. Like my best friend.”

PJ didn’t care. His smile only widened. “How do you do, cousin/sister/best friend of Clint?”

I snorted, laughing.

“Not cool, PJ. Not cool.”

“She’s cool enough for me.” He kept looking me over.

“Uh. Hey, guys.” Theresa waved. “Since we’re in the football parking lot, maybe we should go to the game?”

Clint shook his head.

PJ nodded, his smile still stretching wide.

Marky was with him, a big hulking guy, but he’d taken off as soon as we arrived.

Clint groaned. “This is going to suck. What’s with your mood? Someone or something has you all worked up.”

Theresa glanced my way, but she didn’t say anything.

I started forward. “Nothing’s with my mood. Maybe I just got tired of trying to blend in for once.” Maybe that was it? No. I knew who’d gotten to me. Scout and every freaking word he said to me.

I took our thermoses and gave them to PJ. “Here. We’re going to go in first. Meet us behind the concessions, and pass those to us.” I motioned to the line of trees, where security wouldn’t catch us.

He looked at them, frowning. “Why can’t I go in with you?”

“Because that’s alcohol.”

Clint just groaned. “You’re going to ruin my night. No booze. Nothing fun. I’m going to be on Ramsay-babysitting duty all night. I can just see it.”

“You owe me for last week.”

He snorted, but he trudged behind us as PJ took off, veering through the cars to around the back section. And he wasn’t being inconspicuous at all, walking with a super-straight back, and moving his feet like he was wearing a jetpack. The whole looking around every three seconds didn’t help things either. I could see why Clint took me last week and not PJ.

“He should never consider a career as a criminal.”

Clint laughed, moving up to walk next to me. He gave me a grin, and I grinned back. Our cousin fight was already over.

Theresa just laughed. “PJ is hilarious.” He was now crouched behind a neon blue car, though no one was looking at him. Then he scurried to the next car and repeated the same action. He continued this way on down the row.

“Clint!” Kira waved from closer to the ticket counter. Ciara and Leanne were with her. The other hulking friend was there, Marky, along with some other guys. More baseball friends.

Kira’s eyebrows were up. “See you changed.”

“Yep.” Clint nodded. “They’re party bound too tonight.”

Kira just gave me a confused look.

I shrugged, not sure what to say.

Theresa noted, “PJ’s probably been arrested by now.”

Kira’s mouth curved down. “What?”

“Nothing.” I hurried off, and yes, I was aware of the looks.

I’d been in a mood when I dressed, but the mood was waning, and I was on the verge of regretting what I’d chosen to wear tonight. But, ugh. Oh well. Own it. I wore it. I’d own it.
