“What does that have to do with her posting the pictures?”

I chew on my bottom lip. Try to ignore the hole widening in my chest. “Not sure.”

“Did you bring it up?”

“No.”

“No.” His eyebrows hiked. “You just accepted it?”

“I told her what I told you.” I glance away from Heath. “I trust her.”

“So you didn’t ask her for an explanation?”

“Heath.”

“Why didn’t you ask?”

My chest rises and falls on a sigh.

I can feel Heath’s stare on my cheek. His judgement. He’s always been the one pushing me to break free of mom and dad’s hold. Because he made that choice, he wants to see me get there too.

I’m different.

I’m not that privileged.

He’s theirs by flesh and blood. He’s their family because he was born into it. No matter what he does, he can’t escape them, and they won’t forget him.

It’s not the same for me.

I was chosen for clout.

Taken in for the purpose of giving the reality show a heartwarming angle.

It’s different for me.

My brother’s voice is low and urgent. “I see you rationalize all the time. And although I hate it. I get it. I do. You feel like you owe them something for adopting you. You feel like you still have to earn their approval.” He sighs. Shakes his head. “You shouldn’t have to do that with the woman you love. You shouldn’t feel that way with Kaelyn.”

“I don’t.”

“So why didn’t you ask her?”

“Enough.” My voice cuts through the waiting room.

Heath blinks. “Kastle—”

“I know her better than I know myself.” I meet my brother’s eyes and speak firmly so he can drop this nonsense. So I can chase the unease in my own heart. “She’s Kaelyn and she’s the best person I know. I trust her.”

Heath doesn’t seem convinced, but he lets it drop. “Fine.”

Just then, the doctor emerges from the surgical ward.

Heath and I scramble to our feet.

The doctor stares in confusion as he takes us in. “Mr. Jameson?”

“That’s us.” Heath steps forward. “We’re brothers.”

The doctor blinks rapidly. His gaze settles on me first, the Asian in the business suit. Next, he surveys Heath’s dark brown hair and green eyes. The wrinkles between his eyebrows deepen as he tries to figure the logistics out.
