We’ve argued before, but we’ve never taken this long to make up.

It feels more serious.

Because we kissed.

Because he touched me in his office.

Because when things exploded, I was sitting in his house spreading roses on his bed in lingerie I expected him to remove from me.

It’s a strange state. Like we’re floating in-between.

In-between lovers and friends.

In-between betrayal and understanding.

In-between.

Limbo.

We can’t break up if we were never together.

We can’t separate if we’re soulmates.

So we just… stare.

Fractured.

Split.

Things got complicated. Messy. Overwhelming.

And now there’s a woman sitting across from him in the candlelight. A woman with long blonde hair and a svelte, willowy body draped by an elegant dress. She’s not a business partner or an associate.

Her body language is too open. Too forward.

She wants Kastle.

And he… does he want her?

Before this moment, I never thought we were beyond reach. That we wouldn’t eventually come back together again and be us. Kaelyn and Kastle. Normal. Maybe not our new normal. Maybe no more candles or roses or sheer robes, but something strong and solid.

I didn’t think we were that broken.

I didn’t think I could hurt anymore than I have.

Wrong. All wrong.

“Isn’t that Kastle?” Brenna gasps, her eyes moving in his direction. Slender fingers grasp my elbow and haul back. “Do you want to leave?”

“What for?” I lift my chin. Square my shoulders. Pretend I’m not bleeding inside.

Brenna gives me a worried look. “We’re here to cheer you up. Staring at the guy you’ve been moping over this past week kind of defeats the purpose.”

“Does Kastle own this restaurant? Am I not allowed to stay if he’s here?”

“Of course not.”

“Then I’m not going anywhere.” I hike my purse and tramp closer to his table.
