Up and down.

Licking her lips.

It’s not shocking anymore. No longer flattering. There’s no rush of adrenaline. No tightening in my pants.

It just is what it is.

Girls can’t wait to get naked with a ‘celebrity’. Can’t wait to tell their friends they hit the sack with the kid who used to cry at the drop of a hat on national television. It’s just a ruse. Just a notch on their belt.

It had its perks.

Before.

But now I’ve had my fill.

Now I’m over it.

“Sorry, girls. I’m not interested.”

“Are you seeing anyone?” The brunette arches an eyebrow.

There it is.

That entitlement.

Like she has a right to ask about my personal life because she ‘grew up with me’.

I let the silence linger.

Let them steam in the discomfort and awkwardness.

My mind goes straight to Kaelyn. She’d be pissed if she were here. I picture the little wrinkle when her eyebrows pull together. The annoyance in her brown eyes.

My best friend’s eyes are stunning. Bright. Deep. Full of passion and joy. Warm. Like the sun itself.

“Hello?” The brunette waves a hand in front of my face. “Do you have a girlfriend?”

If I’d agreed to Kaelyn’s plan, I would have said yes. Hell yes. I would have boasted that I have a woman and, in fact, I’m about to go find her and pin her against a wall.

But I don’t say that.

Instead, I force a smile because these guys are the reason my family’s made a fortune. “It was nice to meet you, but I’m in a rush so…”

She scoffs. Turns to her friend. “Whatever. He’s much cuter on TV.”

I don’t answer. I just dig my bag higher on my shoulder, clench my jaw and walk away.

Seven

The office is quiet. My boss, Brenna, is on a research trip out-of-state. There’s jazz on the radio. The old kind. The kind that aged so well it almost feels like I’m in a smoky coloreds-only club.

Not that I’m a huge fan of that particular phase of American history.

But the music that came out of it…

Yes.
