I follow him. “Thanks for today. For… you know.”

“I should be the one thanking you.”

“You agreed to the deal.”

“Only because I see the benefits.”

“You think we can pull it off?”

“It’s going to be fine.” Instead of moving back, he takes a step toward me. “Don’t worry.”

“I’m not.”

He gently touches the wrinkles between my eyebrows. “You forget I know you too well.”

“You forget that I’m much stronger than I look.”

His fingers drop to my cheek and graze the underside of my chin. “Nothing will happen to you.”

“I’m not afraid.”

He bobs his head. “I believe you.”

I take his fingers and squeeze. “I’ll choose the pictures after I’ve changed.”

“Subtlety?”

“For now.” I grin.

He smiles back at me.

We would have been content staring at each other until mom clears her throat. “Kastle, don’t you have work?”

“Right.” He startles and pulls his hand back. Sending me a sheepish look, he nods. “See you tonight.”

“Bye.” I watch him climb into his car and wave.

“You two.” Mom giggles.

“What?”

“I’m just reminded of how inseparable you were growing up. Kastle’s chauffeur would come pick him up and you’d stand on the lawn just like that and bawl your eyes out, acting like you wouldn’t see him the next day.”

“If you’re accusing me of being immature, you’d be right.” I flash her a cheeky grin and wrap my arms around her. “I still need my mommy.”

“Oh, you’re wet!” Mom playfully smacks me.

I rub my dark cheek against her pale one. “I’m bringing the ocean to you.”

Mom squeals and wiggles out of my grip.

I chase her into the house and collide with dad.

“Dad!” I squeal and wrap him in a wet hug.

His laughter rumbles all the way down his barrel chest. “I thought I heard your voice. And Kastle’s.”

“They both skipped work to go play at the beach,” Mom says, grabbing a towel and handing it to me with a this girl look on her face.
