My fingers swipe against my phone again.

In a patient sweep, I check Kaelyn’s social media for new updates.

There are none.

I’m worried, but I don’t want to be too overbearing.

It’s possible she had a new plan. Maybe she’s going to discuss it with me tonight.

I push my phone away and try to concentrate.

The office is empty.

Only the drip, drip of the coffee machine breaks the quiet.

I sent my assistant home early. She held up the slack while I was off gallivanting with my best friend and I figured she deserved it. Now I wish I’d accepted her offer to stay and help me.

The silence feels off.

Lonely.

Or maybe that’s just me.

Unease sweeps through my heart as I stare at my quiet phone.

Is Kaelyn okay?

It doesn’t make sense that she hasn’t posted yet. She said she would. If she changed her mind, she would have contacted me.

I let out a breath and shove my chair back. Reaching for the jacket I normally keep there, I realize that I’m snatching air.

Right.

I gave Kaelyn my jacket today.

Suddenly, the door bursts open.

A woman saunters inside. “Hello, son.”

“Mom?” I check my watch. “What are you doing here?”

“I was waiting for you to call me back and apologize.”

“Apologize?”

She lets out a breathless laugh and folds her arms over her chest. “For hanging up on me today.”

My eyebrows pull together.

A headache begins to pound behind my ears.

Talk about horrible timing.

I turn to her. “What do you want?”

“I told you. An apology.”

I grit my teeth. Check my phone.
