Or he calls me ‘Kae’.

Or he wraps his arms around me.

It stings so much when the person you want is so close and yet so far away.

But it’s better than having nothing.

It’s better than being apart.

I thrust the key into the lock and turn. It clicks. Gives way.

Mom keeps worrying. “We can come back home.”

“No. I’m inside now.” I sling my purse off my shoulder and toss it aside. Reaching out, I flick on all the lights. “Enjoy the rest of the concert. Dad was really excited about it.”

“You sure?”

“Mom, I’m not a baby anymore.”

She sighs as if the very thought saddens her. “You’ll always be my baby.”

I discard my shoes at the door. “Then can I have my allowance back?”

“As soon as you clean your room.”

“Ah, forget it.”

She laughs. “I’ll call you later, sweetie.”

I hang up and bring Kastle’s text to the forefront again.

KASTLE: I’m coming over. I need air.

My heart skips a beat.

What is he doing to me?

I need air.

My fingers tighten around the cell phone.

A knot forms in my stomach.

When we were kids, those words were code for Kastle wanting to meet me in our secret hideout. Now, I’m putting so much meaning into them, thinking that he needs me as much as he needs air.

Which isn’t what he’s saying.

And the truth only makes me hurt more.

There’s a knock on the door.

Is he here already?

I’m excited enough to throw the door open, but fear traps me in place. I inhale deeply. Walk forward. Peer through the peephole.

It’s him.

I untwist the first lock. The second. The third.
