But that’s mom.

And this is Kaelyn.

It’s different.

I’m sure…

I’m sure there’s a reason.

I beat back my rabid thoughts and soothe them with memories of Kaelyn. With her smile and her curls falling in her eyes and her brown skin glowing in the sun.

It’s fine.

I’m fine.

She’ll explain in the morning.

I settle down and conduct my meeting.

After, I go to bed and fall into a restless sleep.

Morning comes.

I’ve got messages from Kaelyn.

She answered.

She explained.

I call her anyway.

She picks up on the first ring. “Hey.”

“Hey.” I pause. There’s something in her voice. I can’t put a finger on it, but I feel a shift. Not a good one. “Hey,” I say again, hoping I can catch whatever it is and dispel it.

“I’m sorry I didn’t see your messages. Mom and dad had me dancing until dawn.”

“Wish I could have been there.”

“Me too.” She goes quiet.

I clear my throat. “Those pictures—”

“Did you see them? I hope you don’t mind. I thought I’d put up a few more. Sell our story.”

“Our story?”

“Yeah.” She pauses. “We're still trying to convince your mom that we’re dating, right?”

Her words stop me.

They don’t fit right in my ears. In my soul.

Something’s off.

But she’s Kaelyn.

She’s my best friend.
