“Were you busy today?”

“Brenna was dragging me around to her meetings.”

“Oh.”

I nervously chew on my bottom lip. “Are you heading out now?”

“Yeah, I’m almost there.”

“Good.”

Silence.

He knows me too well. Kastle can tell when something’s up even if I try my best to hide it.

I clear my throat. “Am I still invited to your place? After?”

“Maybe.”

“Playing hard to get?”

“You’re keeping secrets.”

“You told me I could.”

“This is different. Talk to me.”

“About?”

“Whatever you need to.”

I pray like crazy that the guilt doesn't seep out in my voice. “What if I’m busy planning something big? Candles. Roses. Everything you asked for.”

“Kaelyn.”

“What?”

He pauses. “Nothing. I’ll talk to you face-to-face.”

Nerves tighten the knots in my stomach. When I notice Brew Drop rising in the distance, I almost turn and run away. I’ve kept secrets from Kastle before. Big ones, like the way I feel about him. And little ones, like the fact that I once snuck into his college dorm room to surprise him and saw him making out with a girl from his class.

I slipped out of the room and cried my eyes out. A few hours later, I went up to his front door, knocked and pretended I’d just gotten off the plane.

Unrequited love sucks.

Especially when the object of your affection is your best friend. The man who would move heaven and earth for you if you asked. The man who does everything to make you fall in love with him.

“Don’t be such a coward, Kaelyn,” I mumble to myself. Shutting down the engine, I climb out of the car.

At that moment, Kastle’s SUV pulls into the parking spot next to me.

The door opens.

He climbs out and buttons his suit.

He’s wearing the outfit I love on him—the maroon jacket and the matching trousers. His hair falls over his strong forehead and it rustles in the gentle breeze. Sharp, almond-shaped eyes lock on me and I feel tingles everywhere.

He slams his door shut, his lips inching down. There’s no smile. No delight.
