Did Lassandra lock her away somewhere?

Did she try to jump in the lake again?

Up ahead, I spot Catherine. She sees me coming her way and stiffens, her eyes widening in a look I often get from people who are intimidated by me.

I stop in front of her. “Where’s Shanel?”

She coughs. “Why?”

“Look, I—” Sucking in a deep breath, I try to remain calm and respectful the way Shanel would like. “Her phone is going straight to voicemail and she’s not responding to any of my texts. I just need to make sure she’s alright.”

Catherine frowns. “Let me try.”

I watch her put the phone to her ear.

She chews on her bottom lip and then her eyes meet mine, mirroring my own worry. “You’re right. She’s not answering.”

“Any idea where she could be?”

“I’ll check our room.”

I grunt my approval.

Together, we rush from the school to the dorms up the hill. They’re a ten-minute hike from campus, but we get there in under five.

The security gives Catherine a hard time, insisting that we should be in class.

I gently push her aside and shove my face in the window. “Duncan, is there a problem?”

“Mr. Hawk.” He blinks unsteadily.

A moment later, the door beeps.

I hurry in and beat a hasty trail up the stairs, Catherine right on my heels.

I expect the hallway to be empty.

It’s not.

Movers crawl over every inch of the space. Big blue boxes rest in their brawny hands and, as I get upstairs, I realize why.

They’re moving everything out of Shanel’s suite.

“The hell are you doing?” I grab a box from one of the guys and yell at another. “Put that down.” Pushing through the workers, I head into the room and find the man calling the shots. I stride toward him. “Hey, you! Get the hell out!”

“Who are you?” He eyes me up and down.

“Someone you don’t want to piss off,” I snap.

My attempts to speak nicely have just been blown to bits.

Sorry, Speedy.

The guy trembles. “Look, we’re just doing our job.”

“Who ordered this?”

“The principal.”
