“He can’t hurt me.”

“Now that’s just stupid. Even if you’re richer than him, his father still has some pull here. You could have started a war.”

“Miles is too much of a coward to face me.”

“Or maybe he still sees you as a friend.”

I squeeze my eyes shut, hoping that’s not the case. The damage is done. B4 is officially over.

I don’t care.

Nothing matters anymore.

I just need to know that Shanel’s okay.

At this point, I’ll be satisfied just hearing her voice.

Confirm for myself that she’s still breathing.

That’ll be enough.

The silence is torture. My days have been blurring together. Panic’s grown to frantic heights.

This island is small, but it has so many damn places to hide someone. To dump a body.

If she’s floating three hundred meters deep…

I hop up, unable to stand that dark thought.

“What are you doing?”

I grab another pair of sneakers and my cell phone. “Going out.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.” I stuff my phone into my pocket. “Somewhere I haven’t looked yet.”

“You’ve been tearing the island up searching for her.”

“I need to—” Pain splices through my head. Linda’s face falls out of focus.

Lifting a hand to my temple, I hold it there and feel a pulse thumping where my skull should be. Groggily, I stumble.

Linda catches me.

Holds me straight up.

The flat of her hand slips against the sweat on my neck. “Hawk, you’re burning up.”

“I’m fine.”

“Lie down.”

“No.”

Linda plants her hands on her hips and growls, “Do as I say. Now.”

I consider disobeying her, but my vision blurs.
