“It was an assumption.”

“Oh goodness.” Shanel slaps her forehead.

“I needed to be sure you weren’t there. I knew he wouldn’t tell me outright.” I scowl. “And I didn’t break in. I knocked politely on the door. He opened it and I told him calmly what I was about to do. It was only when he started making noise that things got more… physical.”

Shanel sighs. “How polite of you. Are you sure you two used to be friends?”

“It would have been worse if I’d found you in his house,” I say in a low voice. “I went easy on him because you weren’t there.”

“Exactly. She wasn’t there.” Fitz crosses his arms over his chest. “And now you’re over here playing house with your girlfriend and Miles is pissed.”

Shanel scoffs. “I’m not his girlfriend.”

Fitz pauses.

Barclay coughs awkwardly.

My eyes bore into Shanel, irritation rising in my voice. “Why the hell not?”

“Do we,” she glances at Barclay and Fitz before training her eyes on me, “really need to have this conversation now?”

“I thought I made myself clear last night.”

“Hawk…”

“You’re mine.”

“No, I’m not.”

“Careful, Shanel.”

“I didn’t agree to anything.”

“You agreed to be mine.”

“For one night.”

“Forever,” I bark.

“Hello,” Barclay waves a hand, “not to get in the middle of your fight, but we need to get back on task. I suggest you smooth things over with Miles or—”

I cast Barclay an annoyed glance. “Or what? He has no power over me.”

“We all know he can’t hurt you. This isn’t about power. It’s about B4. I’m afraid we’re going to combust at this point. There’s no putting us back together again.”

“Miles is out.”

“Hawk.” Fitz levels me a scolding gaze.

Barclay frowns. “Let’s just think about this. We’ve been through a lot together—”

“I’ll apologize to him,” Shanel says.

“Like hell you will.”

“Why would you?” Fitz asks. “You didn’t do anything. It was this idiot’s fault.” He points at me.

I scowl.
