“Who? Catherine?”

“Shanel,” I growl.

“Tell her yourself.”

I curse him out. “Don’t play with me, Fitz.”

“I’m not your messenger. If you have something to say to your woman, stop being a coward and tell her to her face.”

I growl angrily. The hell does he think he’s talking to? “I have my reasons.”

“And they are?”

“You wouldn’t understand,” I spit.

“I understand that you’re acting like a baby.”

“Watch it, Fitz.”

“The great Hawk Banner brought to his knees by love.”

“Shut your mouth.”

“I’ll shut it when you prove me wrong.”

“Fitz…”

“I’ll tell Shanel to expect you. See her once before she goes.”

“Fitz, don’t you dare—”

Click.

I haul the phone back. “Did he just hang up on me?”

Anger roars to life.

I get up and pace the deck.

Go to Shanel?

And say what? I love you and I want to be there when you cross into the other world like I was there when my mother walked out the door?

Yeah, I’m aching to relive that.

Suddenly, I hear the roar of a chopper.

Lifting a hand to shade my eyes, I glance up and see a huge machine blocking the sun. The blades are so powerful the waves charge away from it in fear.

My boat rocks unsteadily.

A ladder unfurls from the helicopter door and a man descends.

My eyes widen.

Dad?

He gets to the end of the ladder and hops off, his shoes landing with a thunk.
