“No.” I swallow. “It’s just… I made up with my dad.”

She gives me a gentle smile. “It’s about time.”

“It happened in the movie?”

“Way sooner than this.”

I pull her close to kiss her. “You’ve got an unfair advantage.”

“Actually,” she says when I finally let her up for air, “the movie ends when the guy gets the girl. They don’t show much after that. So the future is still unwritten.”

“I like that.”

“I like you,” Shanel says sassily. “Even if you can be a jerk sometimes.”

I laugh.

We kiss and cuddle in the guesthouse a few minutes more before I can no longer ignore my vibrating phone. I know Dad and Linda are waiting for me at the house, but I’m surprised when Shanel and I head back and find Fitz, Catherine and Barclay in the kitchen.

“It’s about time,” Dad says, giving me a knowing look. “Did you work things out?”

Shanel grins. “Mr. Banner!”

Dad greets her with a smile. “Shanel.”

They start to chat like they’ve been friends forever.

Barclay pulls me aside and looks me over. “Nice tan.”

“Thanks.”

“I’m guessing Shanel’s into the beach-boy look.”

I think of how ravenous she’d been in the guesthouse and smirk.

Barclay grins. “Say no more. I can already tell she’s crazy about it.”

I laugh.

“Speaking of girls,” Barclay whispers, “Fitz has been holding out on us.” Barclay points to Catherine who is hugging Shanel over by the kitchen. “Caught him and Coffee Girl making out in the playroom this morning.”

Fitz blushes three shades of red. “It’s a recent thing.”

“Congrats.”

“Whatever.” Fitz coughs. “By the way, Miles left the island.”

“When?”

“Yesterday. His parents don’t want him at Brighton Academy if he’s not engaged to Shanel. They’re trying to set him up with someone else. I hear she’s a politician’s daughter.”

“Good. Hope that works out for him.” I glance across the room, my gaze naturally gravitating to Speedy.

She catches my eye and gives me a slow, secret smile.

A lover’s smile.

My body stirs with desire again.
