“You never told us what happened to that boy,” I murmur.

“He visited our world and almost drowned, but a girl rescued him. He wanted to come back and find her. I told him I would make a way, but right after that, my lab got shut down. I never got to help him.”

I think of Shanel and her boyfriend—the tall, tan guy who’d rushed into the clearing to convince her to stay. “Pavel.”

“What?”

“I think he found her.”

“Why would you say that?”

I shrug. “Just a feeling.”

Pavel sighs. “I hope he did.”

“You two are no fun.” McCarthy frowns. “I’ll just drink all this myself.”

“You do that,” I say, grabbing my car keys.

“Where are you going?” Pavel calls.

I turn the bracelet Shanel gave me around so it glints in the light. “There’s somewhere I have to be.”

The men stare at me, but I hustle out of the garage without another word.

As I get in the car, my mind whirs. Earlier, I stopped by Shanel's parents to deliver her bracelet and made a troubling discovery.

The kind of discovery that changes everything.

I tighten my fingers on the steering wheel and focus on the road ahead.

Twenty minutes later, I park in front of a shabby apartment.

Black skies greet me when I step out.

A gentle breeze whips my hair around.

I walk steadily toward the front door. A woman steps out at that moment. Brown fingers twine around a heavy garbage bag. She glances up and her short curly hair flounces around her small face. Her dark brown skin is smooth and flawless. Her button nose and full-heart-shaped lips draw my gaze.

I force my inspection away and find her dark brown eyes.

My brain suddenly goes blank.

Maybe it’s the fact that my hunch is correct.

Or maybe it’s something else.

Whatever the reason, it feels like I’m standing in the middle of a lightning storm when she looks at me.

“Can I help you?” she asks, in a smooth, sweet voice.

I lift a hand. “I’m Dr. Morgan Bacher.”

She eyes me.

“Can we talk?” I add.

She gestures to the garbage. “Busy.”
