“My only charm.” I wink. “I’m taking out the boat this evening.”

“Good for you.”

“I want you there.”

Her eyes sharpen. “Wishful thinking.”

“Your only choice is to say yes.”

“Oh?”

“I’ll throw you over my shoulder if I have to.”

Her nostrils flare. “I’d like to see you try.”

“Should I prove it?” I drop my arms to her hips.

“You wouldn’t dare.”

I let her think that I’m above such tactics and lean back. “Are you going to be suffering from any sudden stomach flus tonight?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“If you didn’t believe me, why did you buy out an entire pharmacy?”

“Because you’re mine.”

“Would you stop saying that?”

“It’s true.” I caress her cheek. "When people see you, they see me.” I lean in. “So naturally, I have to take care of you the way I would myself.”

Her eyelashes flutter together.

Small fists clench at her side.

She trembles. “You are… something else.”

“I’ll take that as a yes to the date.”

“It’s a ‘never gonna happen’.”

“I’ll pick you up after class.” I back away, keeping my eyes on her. “I don’t want you running before I can find you.”

She rolls her eyes.

I dip my fingers into her pocket and hold up her phone.

“Hey!”

I offer it to her. “Last thing, answer me when I text you.”

“Jerk,” she hisses beneath her breath.

I laugh, not quite believing how light I feel. After my conversation with Doc, I thought I’d be stomping around all day.

Talking about my father does that to me.
