“Shanel!” Catherine gapes.

I stare Hawk down.

With a tilt of his head, he shrugs. “I guess.”

“You guess what?”

His lips curl up in amusement.

He thinks she’s pretty.

My eyelashes flutter.

My pulse speeds up.

Ice snakes through my veins.

That’s what I wanted to hear but—

He arches an eyebrow. “Are you jealous, Speedy?”

“N-no.”

“Is anyone else feeling awkward?” Catherine mumbles.

Silence.

Catherine grabs a shot glass. “No? Just me?”

“I want you.” Hawk lowers his voice, his thumb stalling on my arm. “There’s no need to—”

I glare at him. “Don’t.”

“You’re upset.”

“How can you want me when you find her attractive?” I hiss.

“Is that your second question?”

“Don’t play, Hawk.”

“That’s the game, Speedy.”

“Bastard.”

“If you thought you wouldn’t like the answer, you shouldn’t have asked the question.”

“Why don’t you just date Catherine then?”

I don’t know why I’m being snippy. Hawk admitted that he finds Catherine pretty. Of course he does.

In another world, I watch him fall in love with her.

I watch him chase her with everything he has.

I root for them to the point of obsession.

I even dream about having a relationship like theirs—one of snappy banter, whole-hearted devotion, and explosive passion.
