“Fitz…” Barclay warns.

I growl. “Watch it.”

“I’m just saying. It’s too early to tell.” Fitz glances at me. “You ever think she might be accepting your feelings because she doesn’t want to get on your bad side?”

“No,” I bite out.

“You’re so used to charging in and getting your way that you can’t acknowledge when someone might not want you back.”

My fists clench at my sides.

Fury unsnarls within me, flapping wildly in the air.

Should I just end it all here? Ask Barclay to help me hide the body?

Barclay shifts nervously. “Let’s change the subject before someone dies.”

“I could be wrong.” Fitz stammers, his cheeks turning pink.

I rest my chin on my fist. Shanel always consumes my thoughts, but now my mind is tainted with the doubts Fitz planted in me.

Is Shanel still hung up on Miles?

I thought things had shifted between us, but she’s still not answering my messages. It’s like I’m back at square one, fighting just to get her attention.

She’s so cold. And I…

My feelings get more intense everyday.

I’ve never been so powerless.

Damn. I don’t want to be this crazy about someone.

I was fine with my life the way it was.

Shanel blew through me like a hurricane and now I’m completely at her mercy.

The elevator whirrs, jarring me from my thoughts.

Barclay glances up. “Miles.”

Miles takes the armchair to my left. “What’s the big emergency?”

It’s strange. Before today, I considered him a friend. Now, especially with Fitz’s concerns ringing in my ear, I’ve forgotten our alliance and I just want to take him outside and punch the life out of him.

It’s the restlessness in me.

It begs for release, one way or the other.

Miles turns sideways in the chair and his legs dangle from the end of it. He’s facing me now and there’s a smug, upward tilt to his lips.

Barclay clears his throat. “We need to talk about B4.”

“What about B4?” Miles asks.

“You two.” Barclay points between Miles and me. “Where do you stand?”

“Why are we doing this, Barclay?” I snap.
