Just as the general enters his place, Azron suddenly snaps his head toward me. I’ve unknowingly stepped out too far from my hiding spot. His eyes land on me, and I feel like a dae caught in the sights of a predator. A smile lights up his face, and he throws a waving hand in the air.

“Elia? Is that you? What are you doing here?”

Shit! What the fuck do I do?

AZRON

I’m in the middle of preparing dinner when there comes a heavy, commanding knock at the door. For a moment, I think it is Elia and that I’ve gotten my times mixed up.

“Fuck!”

I turn around and dust off my hands as I trot toward the door. I open it to the sight of General Gel’ged Senel standing there, his chin raised high in all his commanding glory. As per usual, I’m far from pleased to see him.

“Can’t say I’m glad to see you,” I say, not bothering to hide my disdain for his unannounced arrival.

“You know I’d much rather be here under different circumstances. I have the files for your mission, let me in so we can talk.”

“Fine.”

I’m not happy to let him in but I step aside, gesturing for him to enter. I believe his words about not wanting to come here, knowing he’s likely facing pressure from his own superiors in the chain of command to get this case rolling.

As he walks by me, I hear the sound of footsteps from down the hallway. My natural curiosity draws me toward the sound, and I turn to see an unexpected sight.

“Elia? Is that you?”

Elia freezes, wearing a strange expression of surprise on her face as if she was just caught doing something that she shouldn’t have been.

There is a contemplative look in her eye like she’s unsure of where to go. I wave to her as Gel’ged settles in behind me. Elia seemingly hesitates for a split moment but comes over.

“What are you doing here?”

“Hey,” she says lightly.

She shoots a quick look behind her before joining me. Her mien is off-putting and suspicious. What is her deal?

I close the door as she approaches so that she can only see me. The last thing I want is for my work in the military to overcross with my blooming love life. I’m already mindful about it and the sight of the general wouldn’t be doing me any favors.

Of course, the general has different ideas. Having noticed I have another guest, he pops his head around mine.

“Who’s there –”

“I’ll be back in a second,” I blurt, pushing him back.

I step out into the hallway and close the door.So much for keeping him hidden.Drawing myself up, I turn to Elia with a friendly smile.

“What are you doing here?”

She hesitates.Damn, she must have caught sight of Gel’ged.

“Are you here for dinner? Because I think you’re about an hour early. I still have everything cooking.”

“Dinner?” she asks, sounding as if she forgot about our date. “Yeah! That’s what I was here for.”

I wait for elaboration, but she just stands there. By now, her behavior is beginning to concern me, and I wonder if there’s something wrong.

“Is everything okay? Did something happen at work?” I clench my fists. “Did Tonnolun come onto you again? If you want, I can go and beat –”
