She’s different from my usual lays, and not just because I want something more from her than a good time. For one, she’s human, and my tastes have never strayed that way before. But there’s something else about her, a fire that lights me up from the inside out.

I only wish it didn’t come with such hot and cold behavior.

I grab a bottle of paquir from the cabinet of fine wines and retrieve two glasses. Soon, everything is ready to go. I give the place a quick once-over just to make sure I didn’t forget anything.

Just as I finish, there again comes a knock at my door. This one is far lighter and more polite. That’s got to be her,I think to myself as I check the time.

I reach for the door and let her in, keen on starting afresh for the evening.

Irun home as if pursued by a serial killer, feeling as if the world is playing a cruel trick of irony on me. Still, I refuse to stop even when I begin feeling breathless. I ignore the begging of my heart to halt and rest.

Of all the happenings that have unfolded over the last while, nothing could have prepared me to plummet head-first into the danger brought by the most recent twist of events.

Is this all a nightmare? Is any of this real?

It feels as though there’s a ploy going on. I need to find out what Azron and General Senal know and just what is going on between the xaphan and the demons.

There are so many questions bouncing around my mind that my head aches. What clues do they have? Could anything link back to me? It can’t be a coincidence that Azron and Zephon are connected…

I finally reach my home, feeling like I’m about to die from exhaustion as I step inside the door. I collapse on my couch, my legs screaming in agony as I wince and pant for air.

“Get yourself together, you idiot!” I yell, slamming a fist on the pillow beside me. “Think of something, a plan! Panicking over anything and everything won’t get you anywhere!”

Internally, I’m wishing this is just a bad dream, that I’ll wake up in the comfort of my bed. My encounter with Vylco wouldn’t be real, nor would meeting Azron or seeing Zephon stroll past the bar.

But this is real life, and my problems aren’t going away unless I do something about them.I should go back to Azron’s for that dinner and see what clues I can dig up under his nose. That folder should do the job nicely.

Rising from the couch, I draw a deep breath and collect my thoughts, clearing my mind for the mission ahead.

“I’ve got to find out everything they know, only then will I be on an even playing field with Zephon… and Azron if needs be.”

I promise myself that I’ll take him on should it come to it, though I’m unsure just how I’d measure up against a demon. I had only ever dealt with xaphan.

Not wanting Azron to be sidetracked and distracted by me during our dinner date, I choose to dress modestly. I decide to wear a loose-fitting sweater and a simple pair of tights.

I’m back at his front door in less than an hour’s time, right on schedule. My hand rests on my sheathed dagger as I hear him approaching the front door. He opens it with a smile and steps aside, gesturing for me to enter.

As expected, his place is elite and far more luxurious than mine. His couch itself is nicer than my bed, and the fireplace takes up almost half of his living room, brightly illuminating the quaint space. On the opposite wall is a cabinet, inside of which are many bottles of paquir.

“You got here right on time. Dinner is just about ready. Come then, have a seat.”

Ever the respectful gentleman, he pulls out a seat for me and pushes it into the table as I relax into it. He then retreats to the kitchen, dishing up for food. He lays down a generous portion of bahru and takes a seat across from me, opening a bottle of paquir.

As he pours the drink, I cast an eye around the place under the disguise of admiring it. I’m really just looking for Senel’s file on me, but it’s nowhere to be seen.

“Do you like the place?” he asks.

“Hmm?” I ask distractedly, having zoned out. “Oh! Yes, yes I do. It’s really nice here.”

“So you were excited to see me earlier, eh?” he chuckles.

“Yeah, I’m sorry again about showing up out of the blue, I don’t know how I lost track of the time like that.”

“No need to apologize, I’m certainly flattered you were so keen on arriving early. Here, try the paquir.”
