“I love you, too, Elia.”

* * *

A few weekshave passed since my assassination attempt on Zephon’s life. Since then, I’ve settled into my new home at Azron’s place. Life has slowly been returning to normal.

My old life before getting to know the demon was being laid to rest. I know that in order to fully put the past behind me, I have to cut off the old, decaying root that is Zephon, but I’ve obeyed Azron’s wishes to let him handle the matter.

I only ever leave the house to go work at the bakery, but I’m no longer working as much as I used to do. I’ve been having thoughts about quitting, and Tonnolun has been playing around with the idea of closing up shop.

These days, I only really bake for Azron. I’m putting together a batch of his favorite pastries when I hear his familiar footsteps enter through the front door.

I break out into a huge smile as I look up to greet him. He approaches me wearing a handsome smile of his own. Tucked under his armpit is a newspaper.

After kissing me, he throws down the paper on the counter, tapping the headline excitedly. He’s never been so excited about the news before, so I follow his gesture to see what has him acting like this.

My jaw drops at the headline.

Top Xaphan Diplomat Killed! Serial Killer Re-Emerges!

Plastered underneath the headline is a graphically detailed picture of Zephon. Large holes are visible through his heart, wings, and his head. His mouth had been sewn shut, but I could tell from his expression that he died in agony. To cap it off, his body had been strung up on the gates of the xaphan embassy, a move that was sure to rile them up.

I spin around to my lover in shock.

“Azron, was this…”

The smile on his face tells me the answer I’m looking for. I can’t believe this is happening. If there wasn’t any defining moment in this relationship before, this would be the one I’d remember forever.

I had expected Azron to bring Zephon to justice through legal and diplomatic means, but the last thing I thought he’d do was murder the bastard in the same fashion that I would have.

I look at the picture of Zephon’s picture once more, feeling nothing but pure satisfaction. Only an individual with a sick mind such as mine can experience this at such a grim sight.

Now, with the last nail being hammered into the coffin, my twisted self can be put to rest with my past, as well as my mother’s turmoil.

It’s done. I feel every ounce of weight lift off of my shoulders, and I collapse into Azron’s arms.

Before any of us can propose a celebration, there comes a heavy knock at the door. Azron and I turn around to see General Gel’ged Senel stroll in. I’m angered at the sight of him, but Azron throws a hand on my chest.

“It’s alright,” he tells me. He then turns his attention to his superior. “What are you doing here?”

“I need to know why nothing has been done to catch this murderer. I thought the xaphan were up my ass before, but what has happened with Zephon is sure to ignite a storm of conflict between us.”

Azron peers down at me. Fueled by my confidence in him, I give him a nod. He understands it as the all-clear to fill the general in on everything.

“Sir, come have a seat,” he says. “There’s been quite a few developments that we need to catch you up on.”

AZRON

THIS SILENCE CAN’T BE GOOD.

Idon’t think I have ever been more tense in my life. I don’t think I was this tense even on the middle of the battlefield.

I open my mouth to speak, because General Senel’s eyes have glazed over, and he is now gazing into the distance.

But then I think better of it.

You don’t know what he’s going to say.
