“Want me to spread some rumours about it around campus?”

“I’d be a legend.”

Sassy shakes her head at me, and takes her last turn at the alley. She has well and truly wiped the floor with me and even after I try to convince her to give me one more chance to beat her, I’m happy when she says no because I’m sure my ego can’t handle being smashed like that again.

We leave the bowling alley, wandering along the street with nowhere in particular to go. It’s still fairly early in the day and the streets are quiet.

“So, what about your family?” I ask.

“What about them?”

“Well, I’ve told you about my deadbeat dad and shitty half-brother. Your turn.”

Sassy opens her mouth to speak, but instead of telling me anything about herself, she points to the local cinemas that are up ahead.

“Wanna see a movie?” She asks. I don’t love sitting in a dark theatre during the day. I’d prefer to be outdoors in the sun and fresh air. But I love seeing her happy, so if Sassy wants to watch a movie, then we’re watching a movie.

“Sure.” We walk towards the complex to check what’s playing. I grin when I spot one of my all-time favourites is being rerun.

“We’re right on time to see Notting Hill!” I exclaim, amazed by our luck. The movie starts in ten minutes.

“No way.” Sassy says firmly.

“What? Why? Don’t you like it?”

“I’ve never seen it.”

My mouth drops open. “You’ve never watched Notting Hill? It’s practically a classic.”

“I don’t do romantic garbage Colt. Isn’t there an action movie playing or something?”

“Nope. You’re seeing Notting Hill with me, and you’ll love it.” I sling my arm over her shoulders and pull her towards the box office.

“I hate you,” Sassy grumbles as I lead the way.

“Usually, my love of romcoms is a hit with the ladies.” I muse.

“Well, I’m not a lady, and I don’t like romcoms.” Sassy sulks as I buy the tickets. “I’ll need an extra big popcorn to get through it.”

“Consider it done.” I grin and we make our way to the candy bar.

A couple of hours later, we emerge from the cinema, blinking against the sunlight and switching our phones back on.

“That was terrible.” Sassy declares, but I just laugh. I saw her face in that theatre and, no matter how much she denies it, I know she enjoyed the movie.

My phone vibrates with an incoming message. It’s from Teddy.

“Oh fuck,” I say as I read the message. “I completely forgot I had an assessment due today.”

“Oops,” Sassy looks at the time. “Maybe you could run it there now?”

“It was due during class. And uh, I haven’t even finished it yet.”

Sassy laughs at me. My phone vibrates again, and I open it, assuming it’s Teddy again. Instead, it’s an alert that I have a new voicemail. As I listen to it, my heart drops.

“What’s wrong?” Sassy asks, seeing the look on my face.

“It was Dean Pritchard’s secretary. He wants to see me in his office first thing in the morning.”
