“What?”

“We both know that’s not the real reason why you haven’t moved in.”

“We do?” I asked, grateful my sunglasses hid the arch of my brow.

“Yes.” He shook his head. “And I think it’s nice that you’re trying to keep Kendall employed, but there has to be another position you can offer her. One that doesn’t require you to continue living in a hotel.”

If it was that obvious to Jude, did Kendall know too?

And if Jude could see through me on this, could he so easily read my feelings for her as well?

“Don’t look so surprised.” He chuckled.

“I, well, yeah. I’ve thought about keeping her.” I cleared my throat. “I mean, keeping her around. We work well together.”

In the short time she’d been helping me with my Spanish, I’d noticed a huge improvement. I now spoke the language with more confidence, and I could more quickly pick up on conversations. It was going to be a huge asset with some of our players and even other teams.

“Exactly,” he said, apparently not noticing or caring about my slip.

“And you’d be okay with that?”

“Why not?” He shrugged. “She clearly needs a job. At least I know you’ll be good to her.”

Oh, the things I wanted to do to her. The ways I wanted to spoil her.

“Right?” Jude asked, turning to me.

“Right.” I shook my head as if to clear it. “Did you have a specific role in mind?”

“You keep whining about finding someone to manage all the stuff with the children’s charities.”

“Whining?” I stared at him, aghast. “Me?”

He laughed and rolled his eyes. “Yes, you. I know they’re important, and I think we need some help.”

“And you think Kendall’s the right person for the job,” I said, already knowing that was the case. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before.

“I think she’d be a good fit. You already know she’s responsible. You said yourself that you work well together.”

I nodded, afraid to say more. Afraid to reveal my true thoughts where Kendall was concerned.

“Plus, she’s got a big heart. This would be right up her alley.”

“You’re right,” I said. “But I’m guessing she might have other plans.”

He shrugged. “It’s worth a shot. I think she’d be perfect for the job.”

I think she’d be perfect for me.

Which was exactly why Ishouldn’toffer her a job.

I’d barely survived the past few weeks. And that was only because I’d been able to avoid the house. Anytime I was near her, our connection became even more difficult to ignore. To deny.

“Dad?”

“What was that?” I asked, feeling as if I’d been caught.

“I asked if you want to grab lunch together.”
