I stilled, his words reverberating through me like a tuning fork that had been struck. Did he…was he saying what I thought he was? We’d been dancing around this tension for weeks, and I thought I might combust.

It had never been like this with Jude. Not even in the beginning. And while I didn’t want to compare the two men, at times, I realized just how much every other man I’d been with paled in comparison to Knox. Even his son.

Bad, Kendall. So, so bad.

But when Knox’s eyes lingered on my lips, all I could think was howgoodit would feel. To give in to him. To this…thisthinggrowing between us.

“What?” he asked, tilting his head to the side. “Is there something in my teeth?” He made the goofiest expression, and I immediately burst out laughing.

“No.” I gave him a gentle shove. “Your teeth are perfect.”Just like everything about you.

“So, you’ll join me?” he asked, taking my hand in his. The one I’d used to shove him. And I was surprised he seemed almost…shy. “On the back patio.”

“I’ll be there,” I whispered, feeling as if we were sharing a secret.

“Good.” We held each other’s gaze longer than was necessary. “It’ll just be us. So wear whatever you want.”

I nodded then headed up to my room to agonize over what to wear. Finally, I gave up and decided to text Emmy.

Hey. Need your opinion on an outfit.

Emmy: Ooh. For a date?

I debated a moment then responded.

Me: I’m not sure what it is.

My phone immediately rang, and I answered it. “Hey.”

“Give me all the details. Where are you going? Who are you going with?”

“I’m—” I stared at the closet, shuffling through my options while trying to keep my voice low. “Knox and I are having dinner at the house.”

“Alone?” she asked.

“Mm-hmm.” I didn’t want to say too much and risk him overhearing. The walls were thick, and it was a big house, but still…

“Is he nearby?”

I shook my head then remembered she couldn’t see me. “No. But he’s home, so I don’t want to talk too loud in case the sound carries.”

“Is this a date?” she asked.

“No.” I lowered my voice to a whisper. “He said he wants to discuss an opportunity.”

“What kind ofopportunity?” Her inflection suggested something more.

“I don’t know.” I flopped down on the bed, wishing I had more answers. She was asking all the same questions I’d been asking myself. “Which is why I need outfit help.”

“Do you think he’s going to ask you to sleep with him?”

“I-I—”

I wanted to tell her that was absurd. And yet…I clenched my thighs together. I shouldn’t like the idea of that as much as I did.

“Ooh. But you want him to,” she said.

“I—” I hesitated, not even sure what to say. “I’ll admit I’m attracted to him. But it can’t go any further than that.”
