“If I had a dollar for every time I’ve had an inappropriate thought about you, I’d be a billionaire.”

She laughed. “Youarea billionaire.”

“Okay. If I had to pay a dollar every time I had an inappropriate thought about you, I’d have no money left.”

Her eyes searched mine. “You would?”

I nodded. “I think about you all the time. When I go to bed, you’re the last thing on my mind. When I wake up, you’re the first. These past few months have been a test of my willpower, and I’m not sure how much longer I can resist the—” I gestured to her “—temptation. Resist you.”

I was practically panting, my heart racing at my confession. It felt as if the organ was surging forward, trying to leave my chest as I awaited her response.

She closed her eyes, her lashes fluttering as if my confession pained her. “I know, but…” Then she opened her eyes slowly and nibbled on her lower lip, tantalizing me even as I prepared myself to be ripped in two. “We can’t.”

I nodded, the air between us swirling with tension. “You’re right,” I said, but that didn’t stop me from stepping closer. “We shouldn’t.”

“Exactly,” she said, leaning closer, leaning in to me.

That was it—the truth. It was finally out there, and I felt both better and worse.

Kendall wanted me, and I wanted her. But we couldn’t be together.

We couldneverbe together. At least, not in any meaningful way.

“What if…” She shook her head and backed away slowly. “No. I should. Yeah. I should go—” She hooked her thumb over her shoulder. “Before we do something we’ll regret.”

I watched her turn and leave, but I couldn’t let her go. I didn’t care that she was younger. That she’d dated my son. Nothing mattered in that moment but this woman. Because when I was with her, it was as if the world stopped.

Before she reached the back door, I called, “Wait.”

She paused but didn’t turn to face me. Her shoulders were hunched with tension, and I knew how she felt because I was damn near ready to explode myself.

“What if…we could have tonight?” I asked, finishing her unspoken question from earlier.

She let out an exhale, her shoulders relaxing as she turned to face me. “Yeah. But that’s impossible, right?”

I shook my head, stepping closer. “Maybe tonight is the one night that this—” I gestured between us “—could be possible.”

“Tonight, we’re no longer boss and employee,” she said, as if trying to convince herself this was okay. “But what about tomorrow?”

I placed my finger to her lips. “Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.” She, of all people, knew that. “So, tell me, Kendall. What do you want?”

She kissed my finger, and my body came alive from that simple touch. I stared, enraptured by her lips, especially when they parted slightly. Inviting me in.

I slid one finger into her mouth, then another, my dick hardening at the warmth. The wetness enveloping me. I groaned, imagining her doing the same thing to my cock.

“Kendall,” I groaned, enjoying the way her eyes darkened with lust.

I removed my fingers, trailing them down her chin. Her neck. To the top of her dress. Her nipples pebbled against the material; they’d been distracting me all night.

“Go for a swim with me?” she asked, almost shyly.

“What?” I blurted, still trying to unscramble my brain.

“A swim,” she said, stepping away from me. Grasping the hem of her dress and pulling it over her head in one smooth movement.

I stared at her, mouth agape. Her body was beautiful in the moonlight, the shadows only accentuating her delicious curves.

“What are you—” I clenched my fists, forcing myself to remain rooted to the spot despite the overwhelming desire to move closer. To touch her.
