Okay, maybe we’d sleep some. But if we only had one night, I planned to make the most of my time with her. And I certainly did. Waking her with my head between her legs. Another time, I woke to her mouth around my cock. I lost count of the number of times I made her come.

Now it was morning, and last night had been…incredible. One of the best nights of my life. And while I knew it was a one-time deal, I wasn’t ready for it to end. The sun might be peeking over the horizon, but as long as Kendall was in my bed—in my arms—I wasn’t going to let her go.

At least, I hadn’t intended to any time soon. I turned and frowned at the empty pillow next to me, the down still indented from her head.

I heard rustling from down the hall, so I grabbed a pair of athletic shorts and pulled them on. When I made it to the door to Kendall’s room, she was frantically pulling on a pair of yoga pants.

“What’s the matter?” I asked, glancing at the clock. It was early. Too early. “What’s going on?”

She jolted but quickly resumed getting dressed. Was she freaking out about what we’d done? Did she regret it? Or had something else happened?

“Kendall.” I stood before her, blocking her path. “Talk to me.”

“I—” She hesitated, looking anywhere but at me. “I need to leave. I have to go.”

“Go where?” I asked, hating the idea, but especially when she seemed so upset.

“My mom—” She shook her head. “She was admitted to the hospital.”

I pulled her into my arms, holding her to my chest. We stayed that way for a moment, and I pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “I’ll make breakfast while you shower, and then I’ll take you up there.”

“I—” She pulled away. “I can’t. I have to go.”

“Okay. I’ll just put on a shirt and grab my things.” I moved to leave.

“Please.” She rolled her bottom lip between her teeth. “You have to stop being so nice to me. You’re making this harder than it already is.”

“Making what harder?” I frowned.

“Everything.” She said the word with such a sense of finality. “We both know I can’t stay. And after last night—” She shook her head, not meeting my eyes. “Well, I appreciate everything you’ve done for me. I appreciate it more than you could ever know.”

She straightened, and I furrowed my brow. I sensed I wouldn’t like what she had to say next.

I rubbed the back of my neck. “Why do I feel like you’re saying goodbye?”

She pressed her lips together then said, “Because I am.”

“Kendall,” I sighed, trying to make sense of everything. “What about the job?”

She shook her head. “I can’t take it. We both know I can’t.”

“Because of last night,” I said. It wasn’t really a question.

I’d known last night would change things, but I’d never expected her to pull away.

“Because of everything.” She pulled a shirt over her head, paying me no more attention. I stood there, feeling helpless as I watched her.

When she zipped her tote bag and stood, I took it from her. I followed her down the stairs, hating everything about this. She headed for her car, but I headed for mine.

“Hop in.” I opened the passenger door. “I’ll drive.”

“Thanks, but no.” She tried to take the bag from me. But when it was clear I wouldn’t budge, she narrowed her eyes at me.

I placed my hand on the small of her back, steering her toward the passenger door of the Maserati. “That wasn’t a request.” She glared up at me, but I stood my ground. “Get in.”

She took a steadying breath. “I can take care of myself.”

“I know you can,” I huffed, frustrated beyond belief. With her. But mostly with the situation. “But it’s okay to let people help you. It’s okay to let them in.”To let me in.
