“Maybe.” It sounded as if she was biting her lip, trying to keep quiet.

“You wanted me to fuck this sweet pussy,” I said, sliding my fingers through her slick folds. All the while, I kissed her neck, her shoulder, anywhere I could reach.

“Yes,” she gasped, arching back into me. I held her tight, not wanting to give her an inch. Not wanting to let her go. “Yes, Knox. Fuck me.”

She whimpered when I increased my pressure, concentrating on the sensitive nub. Her hips were rocking now, and she was trying to hump my hand. I fucking loved how wild she was.

“Will you stop torturing me now?” she begged.

“Mi cielo,” I said, slipping my other hand into her hair and fisting it. I pulled gently, tilting her head back so her face was angled toward mine. “You’ve tortured me since the moment I laid eyes on you. I’m only just getting started.”

“This—” She shook her head. “No. This is it. The last time. We’ll get each other out of our systems once and for all.”

I chuckled, the sound dark as it echoed off the tile walls. I didn’t think that would be possible. At least not for me.

I couldn’t do it. I wasn’t going to let her walk away from me again.

I didn’t know what that meant for our future, but I refused to have a repeat of our first time together. So, I removed my hand, licking it clean before putting her skirt back in place.

She tilted her head back, her lips extra pouty. “What are you doing?”

With more restraint than I thought possible, I said, “Later.”

She turned to face me, skin still flushed. “What do you mean—later?”

“We’re going to talk about this more later. At my house,” I said, knowing I was taking a risk. Knowing it was going to be fucking painful to try to ignore this hard-on until then. “Tomorrow night. Over dinner.”

I didn’t want to wait that long. I didn’t want to give her even more time to change her mind. But I was supposed to attend a business dinner tonight with the MLS commissioner and some of the other team owners, and it was an engagement I could not break.

Besides, if Kendall came over tomorrow night, I could give her my full attention. We could spend the weekend together. I was already imagining it, in detail.

But then she placed her hands on her hips. “And what if I say no?”

“Do you want another orgasm?”

She narrowed her eyes at me. “You play dirty, Crawford.”

“No, Kendall.” I took her chin in my hand. “I play to win.” I adjusted myself and headed for the door. “And I’ll be waiting for you.”

She muttered something under her breath that sounded a lot like, “Cocky bastard,” but I merely smiled and continued on, pumping some hand sanitizer and rubbing my hands together before I left.

When I reached the patient wing, I could hear the excitement bubbling out. I grabbed some of the team gear we’d brought to give away and started making the rounds. The kids were adorable, and their parents seemed just as giddy about our visit.

I took pictures of them with the players and laughed when some of the guys attempted to put on a puppet show. Jude was busy with some of the other kids, and I was relieved he didn’t seem to have noticed my absence.

I didn’t know what Kendall and I were going to do about my son, but staying away from her wasn’t working. Maybe I should’ve been stronger. Maybe I should’ve tried harder. But I was so tired of fighting it.

Kendall entered a minute later, her expression betraying nothing of what had just transpired between us. She took a seat at a table where some kids were crafting, eagerly joining in the efforts despite her distaste for hospitals.

I admired how she threw herself into the job. How she dedicated herself to making sure the event ran smoothly, and participated as well.

She said something, and the kids erupted into laughter. They adored her. Hell, who wouldn’t?

Kendall and I had never talked about children, but it was clear she delighted in them, as did I. She would be a great mom someday—if that was what she wanted. But I couldn’t be the person to give it to her.

CHAPTERTHIRTEEN

“You okay?” Emerson asked as she rolled up her yoga mat beside me. “You seem distracted today.”
