“It’s complicated, Liv.”

“Is it? Or is it simple? You’re doing business with the husband. The wife is not around. Out of sight, out of mind. Easier to look the other way than to make waves. She’s not important enough, right?”

If Liv’s this upset about cheating, what’s going to happen when she realizes killing is in my job description? This is the downside of getting involved with someone innocent and idealistic.

Olivia stands, rubbing her eyes. “I’m going to wash my face and take a bath. I should fly home tomorrow, so I don’t ruin the rest of your trip.”

As she tries to pass, I catch her around the waist and pull her into my arms. When she tries to move, I tighten my grip.

“Or I can take you home, so your objection lands a blow,” I say.

“You’d leave?”

“Yeah.”

Her arms slide around me, hugging me.

I kiss the top of her head and then release her. “Go wash your face and get ready for bed.”

She nods and goes back inside.

I text my brother.

Liam: You’ll be alone tomorrow, so stay sharp. I’m headed back to Boston early. You and I will talk Monday. Good?

Aiden: yeah

I walk insideand set my phone on the nightstand. The deal will move forward as planned. No need to cross paths again with Giovanni when I’ve already seen what I needed to see.

Olivia emerges from the bathroom in a white t-shirt and the new peach underwear. My entire body is instantly at attention.

As she dries her face with a small towel, she says, “Aiden said he talked to the guy who followed me from school and that the guy knew my name.”

“Yeah, he told me. I’m looking into it.”

“Into who the man is?” She tosses the towel back into the bathroom.

“Yes.”

Pausing in the doorway, she tilts her head. “How?”

“We’ll talk to your neighbors and take a look around when you go back to school.” I strip out of my clothes and pull back the bed’s covers. “The guy was driving a rented car. Can you think of anyone from out of state who wants to see you or hurt you?”

Her eyes widen. “No. Out of state? No way. My dad’s the only person I can think of who might want to get in touch with me. His immediate family knows I don’t want to speak to them. I have some distant relatives, but no one who is really interested in me.”

“There haven’t been any men trying to get your attention?”

“What men? No. Some great aunts and distant cousins got in touch when Mom died. A few of them came to the funeral, but he—the man who followed me—definitely wasn’t there.”

“Well, some people are crazy and blow things up in their minds. It could be something random. He could’ve seen you on the street or at work and started following you. Might have asked someone your name. Don’t worry about it, though. We’ll take care of it.”

She shivers. “But who would he ask? My neighbors wouldn’t just give out information about me to a stranger.”

“We’ll see.”

“How?”

I exhale a sigh of mock exasperation. “What is this? Twenty questions? Come over here.” I climb in bed and wave for her to join me.
