“What’s going on, Francesca? Why are you here?” My voice is still gravelly from sleep, but she’s come into focus and looks pissed. Which is the kind of bullshit I’ve come to expect from her.

An arranged marriage to a woman from another crime family made sense for me. Until it didn’t.

My eyes strain in the low light, but I can clearly see a pair of suitcases against the wall. Carry-on luggage. Mine andOlivia’s.

Where is Olivia?

My gaze sharpens as I look around the room. The bathroom door stands open, so unless she’s hiding in the shower, she’s gone.

Frankie’s eyes follow my gaze to the suitcase. “You’re fucking someone else?”

“I asked what you’re doing here.” My tone is sharp and impatient.

After I climb from the bed, I yank on my trousers. I need to find Olivia before she hears this conversation and misunderstands.

As I start toward the door, Frankie's voice drips venom as she says, “Don't bother. Your little whore scampered off.”

I turn slowly and narrow my eyes. "What did you do?”

She glances down at her long red fingernails. “I told you I’m not done with you.”

“Who the fuck do you think you are?" I say, the menace in my voice causing her to stiffen. “Coming to my house at the crack of dawn?" I grab her arm and pull her from the room.

“Let go of me,” she says, trying to jerk her arm free.

My grip tightens.

Frankie fancies herself a tough girl. And there’s no doubt that in a fight with another woman, she’d do plenty of damage. The thought of her intimidating Olivia makes my muscles clench as though they’re ready for action. I hold myself in check since the thing I’d like to smash is female.

“Olivia?” I call out as I pull Frankie down the stairs with me.

“What part ofshe's gonedo you not understand, Liam? Stop being a dumb prick, and let's talk.Reallytalk. Because I need a chance—”

When we reach the foyer and there’s still no sign of Olivia, I turn toward Francesca, shaking her by the arm. “What did you say to her?”

“Who gives a fuck about that pale, skinny little bitch?”

“Get out of my house, Frankie. If you're smart, you will not come back.”

“This isn't over. I'm not... this—you and me—it's happening. It has to.”

“No. Never.” I jerk the front door open and wave for her to walk through it.

“I'm not leaving. You're not throwing me out like the trash!” She spins away from the open door, seething.

It’s fucking unbelievable. The lies, the deception. She is out of her mind to think I’d let all that go.

“We are getting married!” she snaps.

“No,” I say with finality. “I’ll never marry you.”

“Listen, I’m getting the annulment. The divorce will get erased, and you and I can get married in the church, just like we planned.”

“You guys lied abouteverything. It was the mother of all catfishing schemes, I’ll give you that.”

“So I’m six years older than we said. That’s nothing. Six years is nothing!”

“It’s not that. It’s all of it together. And you and I are not a good match, even without the lies.”
