“Callahan was released from the hospital in stable condition and remains in police custody. As previously reported, Ms. Di Luccio, who was also shot, died at the scene.”

I grab a small trash can from the corner and vomit into it. The rest of what the woman says blurs into the background. I lower myself to the floor, so I don't fall. Sweat dampens my shirt as the room spins around me.

I can't believe Liam’s fiancee shot him and is now dead. Is that because of me? She was so furious.

Leaning back against the wall, I wait until the dizziness fades. Using the edge of my shirt, I wipe the sweat from my temple and breathe slowly through my mouth.

On the news, there’s a follow-up discussion about the Di Luccio crime family that causes me to become drenched in sweat again. The wordvendettais used several times.

“As you know, Rob, Liam Callahan has been in trouble with the law before. At eighteen, he served a year in jail for manslaughter over an incident that happened when he was seventeen. He got into a fight that left a man dead. At the time, he’d allegedly been working for Joseph Sullivan, the presumed head of the Irish Mafia here in Boston. And the prosecutor…”

The Irish Mafia.

Thoughts explode in my head. Liam is a member of an organized crime syndicate? And Giovanni Di Luccio, the man we ran into in South Carolina, was his future brother-in-law? And also a mobster? How could Liam keep that from me?

The surprised look on Giovanni’s face makes sense now. He must have been furious to see Liam traveling with another woman. Did Liam remind the man he was in no position to balk because he has his own mistress? Did Liam really think Giovanni would keep things a secret? From his own sister? My stomach churns.

Another thought occurs to me. Does the Di Luccio family blame me for the situation that led to Liam’s fiancee’s death?

How can any of this be happening?

Finally, I get up and walk to the bathroom to brush my teeth.

A pregnancy test sits on the edge of the sink… delivered with my groceries today.

It’s only been a week since that first time when we forgot the condom at first. It could be too soon for the test to work, but I’ve been feeling sick and it’s one of the early detection ones. I’ve told myself I’ll take one now, and if it’s negative, I’ll take one again when it’s been longer.

After the news, I’m more scared than ever to find out.

My breathing is choppy as I unwrap the test.

I get on with it, my mind still spinning. Time ticks by, and I wait.

This whole thing is like a dream that turned into a nightmare. I blame myself. Why didn’t I ask more questions? Why did I sleep with him immediately?

I can’t even remember what he said he did for a living. It definitely wasn’t Mafia associate or whatever he actually is. Liam’s a total fraud, and an absolutely shameless one… promising to take me places in the future. Bastard.

Standing, I glance down at the test and break out into a sweat again.

Oh, God.Positive.

After one fateful long weekend with a killer, I’m carrying his baby.

CHAPTER10

LIAM

Isit at my kitchen table, staring out at the water. My lawyer’s just left, so when I hear the key in the lock, I stand, knowing it’ll be Aiden. He’s been to Olivia’s four times. Today, I told him to get in the building, no matter what it takes. I want to know she’s all right.

The thought that the fucking Di Luccios or her goddamned stalker could’ve taken her leaves me feeling like my gut’s full of lead. The urge to go to her place myself is so fucking strong it takes half a bottle of Scotch to resist the impulse.

Drawing attention to her is off-fucking-limits, I remind myself.Too many people are watching you right now.

After walking down the hall, I wait.

The door opens, and Aiden steps inside.

In the background, reporters shout questions.Fucking vultures.
