Ash hops inside, so she’s sitting in the middle of the backseat.

“Not you,” the gunman barks.

“Too late,” the man on the seat says, holding Ash’s arm. “Let’s go.”

The outside man picks me up and drops me inside and then slams the door closed. I try to re-open it, but the childproof locks must be engaged because it doesn’t open.

The man with the gun gets in the front seat, and the engine revs. The car lurches forward and then glides around the corner of the building and out of the parking lot.

“I don’t understand,” I say. My gaze darts from Ash to the man with slicked-back, dark hair who sits at the far end of the backseat.

“Someone wants to talk to you,” he says.

Ash’s hand hovers above her lap where only I can see it. She lowers it, and I understand that she wants me to stay calm or at least pretend to be that way.

“This wasn’t necessary,” I say softly as I shift to sit back.

The man in the front seat says, “Get their purses and make sure they didn’t message anyone.”

The man in the back grabs the strap of my bag and jerks it to him.

“Hey, come on. I’ll give you my phone,” Ash says as he grabs hers. “There are some girl products in it that Ineed, Sir.”

He hesitates for a second.

The gunman in the front seat says, “Take that fucking purse right now.”

With a sharp tug, Slick yanks it away from her.

By now, I’m sure these men work for the Di Luccio crime family. And if they’re kidnapping me, the family can only want one thing.

Revenge.

“I’m pregnant,”I whisper in Ash’s ear as the car slows to enter an industrial garage.

There’s a flicker of surprise on her face, and then Ash assures me, “It’ll be okay.”

I squeeze her arm. “You knew from the start they were dangerous. Why did you get in the car?” I whisper.

“No bride left behind,” she murmurs without the slightest trace of amusement. Ash’s eyes are focused on the first man who talked to us. The one who flashed his gun.

The sound of the locks disengaging causes Ash’s cornflower blue eyes to flick to the door. The car slows to a stop, and my door is opened.

When I don’t get out, Giovanni Di Luccio reaches in and grabs me. As he pulls me forcibly from the car, I’m able to get a good look at him. The lines around his eyes and bracketing his mouth are more deeply etched than they were two years ago, but otherwise he’s the same.

Slick from the backseat drags Ash out of his side of the car. When he brings her around, Giovanni goes still.

“What the fuck is this?” Giovanni snaps.

“Nichols had a bridesmaid with her. This one jumped in the car, so we had to bring her along,” Slick says.

Giovanni scowls. “Don’t you recognize her?”

The men from the car exchange looks and then glare at Ash.

Slick grimaces. “She said she was the girl’s high school friend.”
