“They were kidnapping Olivia. I couldn’t let her go alone, so I jumped in the car, too.”

“She was the target? Not you?”

“Not me.” She licks her lips. “Went along for the ride like I said. Pushed my panic button to give you the heads up. They took us to a warehouse. I recognized Giovanni Di Luccio, and he recognized me. I tried to de-escalate the situation, Scotty, but that didn’t fly. They were going to trunk me and call a message to you later. But I had a bad feeling about what they would do to Liv. I told them she’s pregnant. I really tried my best to move the train onto another track.”

Trick’s eyes flick to me and then back to his sister.

“But like I said, I couldn’t. One of the guys was close enough, holster unsnapped, so I went for it.” She swallows. “I told you already how it went, two wounded, two dead, their side. Giovanni had Olivia in a chokehold. She couldn’t breathe, and I was afraid it might kill her or hurt the baby.”

My heart hammers in my chest, and I feel like smashing a fist into the bricks. Giovanni Di Luccio tried to strangle the love of my life. Which would have killed her and my unborn child. I don’t even know if the baby she’s carrying is still alive. That thought makes my muscles knot and my jaw clench. If the baby died, I am going to slaughter old man Di Luccio and every last soldier he’s got.

“Giovanni told me to put the gun down. But I’d already killed one of his guys, and I didn’t trust him to not kill Olivia.” She compresses her lips between her teeth for a moment. “I had a kill shot, so I took it,” she whispers. Her eyes rise to look at Trick and Anvil.

I could kiss her, but I refrain from letting my reaction show. She’s not looking for my approval. She wants to know what Trick and Anvil think.

Aiden doesn’t hold back, though. He grabs her and hugs her. “You’re a fucking rock star.”

“Thanks,” she says in a low voice, but her gaze goes back to the C Crue guys.

They exchange looks with grave expressions.

“Talk first, ‘Vil,” Trick says.

“You jumped in a car like you’re a low level enforcer on the Callahan payroll.” The corners of Anvil’s lips curl down in a scowl. “That’s not how you should’ve played it, BG. You’re C Crue royalty, not staff.”

“I know… but she’s my friend. And these guys are our friends.” She looks at Trick. “You would’ve done the same, right, Scotty? In my place?”

“Yeah, I would’ve. ‘Vil’s right too, though. You’re not me. You and I agreed, you were gonna stay on one side of the line. Self defense only.”

“Yeah, but it felt like self defense. Emotionally.” She bites the corner of her mouth. “So I guess… maybe we should rethink the line?”

“We’ll talk about it.”

“You got something for us, BG?” Anvil says, holding out his pig paw, palm up.

I wonder what BG stands for. I can’t imagine it’s baby girl, since that’s got definite connotations.

Ash pulls the gun out from the small of her back and sets it on Anvil’s hand.

Anvil glances at it and then at her face. “Twenty two and oh in your first firefight against an experienced crew of made men? That’s legit. I’m proud of you.” He drops the gun into his pocket.

“Yeah,” Trick says. “You gave us a fucking heart attack, but other than that, good job.”

She smiles and winks. “Wanna see Liam’s baby, Brady, now? He’s super cute.”

“Yeah, go get him and bring him to the kitchen. We’ll be right in,” Trick says.

“Okay.” With that, she darts back to the house, seeming once again like the bubbly teenager I’m used to.

“She’s never shot anyone before. Just targets,” Trick says. “But she’s got a gift.”

“Runs in the fucking family, huh?” Aiden says, his expression bemused and serious.

“That it does,” Trick says. “But that’s not something we want known. So if today ever comes up with outsiders and you feel the need to comment, Ash never even touched a gun.”

“Not a problem,” I say.

“Good.” Trick’s gaze flicks to Anvil. “Anything else?”
