“I’m going to work to get us to that place, Kanan. I’m going to contact Colby’s mother. I have a number for her.”

That scared me so badly, I had to keep myself from starting to shake. “Why?”

“To sign the papers to give up her rights completely. When it’s time for us, Kanan, to make things…official, I want you to adopt him. If you’re willing, that is, and if you don’t mind waiting a little longer.

“I’ve thought a lot about it. I can’t simply jump into it, not where the kids are involved, but I want you to know my intentions. If things are still good with us in six months, we’ll revisit this conversation, and…that’s what I want.”

My heart was in my throat, lodged so badly I couldn’t speak at first. He turned me to face him and brushed away my tears.

“Rick…I don’t know what to say.”

“If that’s moving too fast, we’ll put the date at a year.”

“No, that’s not it. It’s just a surprise. A great one. Where the kids are concerned, no, I don’t want to rush. We can keep working towards that, though. I’d love that.”

We kissed under the stars and the cold was forgotten. The air itself was warmed by our love. Cheesy, I know, but when a person is in love as I am with Rick, they can’t help it. Cheesy is an expression of it.

“Okay,” he said in a huff once the kiss was done. “Kama, Kanan. Let’s get this night going.”

“Yes, Sir.”

Gloved hand in gloved hand, we walked back to the car, and he opened my door again, waiting until he was sure I was in and comfortable before he closed the door.

That was Rick. Every little detail of the things he did was to care for someone. Little things for Rick were every bit as important as the big things. As he drove the rest of the way to Cowpokes, I glanced over at him repeatedly as I still couldn’t believe we were together. Someone like him being with me made me feel incredibly lucky.

Not that I felt lower than him in any way. One of those little details he took care of continuously was to ensure I felt at ease, that I knew we were equal in every way despite him dominating me sexually.

The place was packed with cars and men meandering around the grounds. We were early for the opening, so Rick parked the car in the spot Damon said he’d reserve for us, near the back of the club.

Joel ran over to us the minute we were out of the car, hugging me and giving Rick a friendly nod.

He looked hot, leather pants and a black muscle shirt that fit him tight enough to show off his lean body. “Whoooweee, don’t y’all look good!”

“You too, Joel,” I said, and Rick agreed.

“Well, Damon an’ Burke wanna give me the door for the first part o’ the night. I ain’t happy ‘bout it, but they’s got their heads set on it.”

Rick walked proudly with him, his chin raised as he held my hand to the back door of the club. “I’m dropping you here and going in like any other member.”

“You’re not just any other member, Rick, but okay. I’ll see you soon.”

I was left with a kiss and Joel watched him walk away. “Sure is a good-lookin’ man, yer man.”

“Joel, stop drooling.”

He giggled and waved his hand to someone. “There’s PJ and his fellas.” PJ waved to him but pointed to the front entrance for the guests. Only Clover and Sebastian started over to us. “Clover’s gonna do a scene, Sebastian too. Those boys are hot as all hell.”

“You’d know,” I teased as I waited for him to unlock the door.

“Yessiree,” he said with a heavy wink.

Sebastian Blacksnake was a fine little man, lean, skin as dark as mine. He was Native American, but I didn’t know which tribe. He liked to tease me. “There’s the real Indian,” he said as usual and shook my proffered hand.

“How are you, Sebastian?”

“Ready to get my fuck on,” he said, laughing as Joel rubbed his hands together and I shook hands with Clover. “We’re doing a scene with Damon between your shows.”

“Damon’s fidg’ty as all hell,” Joel exclaimed. “Ne’er saw him so nervous.”
