“Anything you need, Kanan, and I’ll help. I can rent a moving truck and some movers if you’d like.”

I laughed a little and explained, “I, uh, don’t have much except clothes and a couple of boxes of personal items. My last…relationship, the things were mostly his.”

“Oh, well, of course. Please, let me know once you give your notice at the diner.”

“I will. Thank you, Rick, for the opportunity.”

“I look forward to seeing you, Kanan.”

The way he said that, well, I was probably reading more into it than was there, but it sounded like he sighed as he said it.

What a great idea to take a job with a man I was attracted to…

“Regrets?” Joel said as he brought me a plate of food out on the porch where I was sitting while he and Burke grilled. I took the steak and roasted peppers, setting the plate on my lap.

“It shows?”

“Sure. Don’t worry none. He’s a good ‘nough fella. Iffin he hits on ya, jus’ tell ‘im you ain’t int’r’sted.”

Tell him I’m not interested. That was a thought. “Yeah, good idea.”

“’nless yer into ‘im.’

I smiled despite the fact I wanted to deny it.

“Thought so. ‘e’s got a bigun. Jus’ so ya know,” he informed me with a wink, then left the porch to head around the back of the house. I sat with my jaw dropped until Damon climbed the porch from the driveway where he’d returned from town.

“Hey. What’s…wrong?” he asked, seeing my gaping mouth.

“Is a bigun…a, well, what I think it is?”

“Joel, Jesus! Who’s got the big one this time?”

I started to laugh. “Never mind.”

“Oh, your pookie.”

“Yeah,” I sighed, unwilling to get into that pointless discussion again.

“I’m happy for ya!” He stopped, looked at my plate, then sniffed the air like a dog. “Meat. I smell meat on a grill. That makes me want to stomp on the ground and run through the brush, chasing Joel.” I laughed and he continued, “That’ll be for later. Food for now.”

He was gone, leaving me to laugh at him. I’d heard enough times about their fun with chasing Joel into the woods, hunting him some before they converged on the poor guy, fucking him senseless, biting and scratching on him.

Primal kink, they’d gotten into it recently, Joel told me, and it was becoming their favorite kink, besides having orgies. I thought it strange, but I didn’t judge people for their kinks. I had a few of my own. I didn’t want to be judged.

I went into the diner on my last day off, heading to Gwen first. “I know you’re not eating here again. You’d never spend so much in one week. You’re…quitting. Aren’t you?”

“Yeah. I love the job, and you know how I feel about you. It’s a means to an end, and a quicker end.”

“I get it. Don’t convince me. This place is great, sure, but trying to save is hard, so…do it! Just don’t fall in love with the man. Not right off, no matter how handsome and charming he is. He may just flirt with everyone and not realize it. Please, protect your heart.

“I plan on it. I don’t ever want to be hurt again. This, I promise.”

After giving my notice, one of my bosses told me they had three people waiting for my job. I didn’t need to wait, and I was still getting a great letter of reference. I was truly liked at the place, and I also had a feeling Rick may have called them and greased the wheels of the easy end of the job.

I drove to his place, calling him on the way. “I figured we needed to get things in writing,” I said as I pulled up to his gate.

“You’re right. I’ve drawn up a contract for you and I expected you.”
