“Yes, it could. I’m thinking on it. I can’t commit yet. Too many things are still very much in the air.”

“But you’ve,” I started, but I choked on the words. “You’ve found someone.”

“Yes,” he said with no hesitation. “At least I think I have. It’s…new to me. I don’t know if anything can come of it, but I’d like to see.”

I wouldn’t…couldn’t say I supported him. My heart was taking a punch and my chest hurt from it.

“What’s wrong, Kanan?”

“Nothing,” I lied. “I’ll…I’ll be glad to meet her.”

He didn’t say another word, simply staring off in the sun.

“We should get back. I have a lot of work to do. My weekend messed up my work a little.”

“I’m free next weekend, so if you need me to handle the kids so you can catch up, I’m fine with that.”

“Weekends are your own, Kanan, but I appreciate the offer and I also may take you up on it for a few hours. Paperwork is piling up.”

“It’s fine. I love being here, Rick. This isn’t like a job to me. It’s better.”

“I’m glad, Kanan." His eyes locked into mine and there was that heat in them. The cobalt with the flecks of bright gold just heated, and I was left staring, like some idiot.

“Kanan, I’m glad you’re here. I’ve…enjoyed meeting you.”

“Sounds like you’re firing me.”

He barked a laugh and denied it. “No, Kanan. I am truly happy you’re here.”

“Okay, good. I am too.”

Chapter Fourteen

Wewalkedaroundthetop of the mountain for a bit then ran back down the slope. Taking it slow, easy, while we ran in sync. My thoughts kept switching on a swivel from Rick to B, B to Rick. I felt like one of those assholes that had someone in the wings in case the relationship I truly wanted was a bust.

It was a possibility, after all. B was sexy, sweet, and if I could see his face while he spoke to me, I’d likely be a lot more excited about it. As it was, he was a maybe, a possibility, but then again, Rick was less than that.

We got back to the yard, and I took a cooling walk around while Rick stretched on the grass. “Good run. My hamstrings are singing.”

I nodded and said, “Mine too.”

“We could pick another spot tomorrow, easier.”

I decided to tease him again. “Can’t you handle two hard runs in a row?”

He stood and swiped the grass from the backs of his legs. “Pushing, huh? I like that. Maybe I need someone to push me a little. You’re on, kid.”

“Good, sir.”

He blinked hard at me for a second, then turned his head away. “Right. Sir, like an old guy, not…okay got it.”

What was he thinking? He was hard to read, like all the time. Frustrated over that, I decided to push, since I’d gotten permission. “Maybe we can talk about more than the weather and the kids. Maybe we should talk about you. You seem to have a lot on your mind. I’m a good listener, I’m told.”

“You see a lot, Kanan. It’s a deal. We’ll…talk about me. And you? Maybe?”

“Sure. You first.”

He reached out his hand and I took it, and his hand stayed in mine, holding it there a long time. It wasn’t uncomfortable, however. No, it felt…good.
