We spent two hours going over the best stores for him to get his needed items, besides the clothes he planned to buy.

We had lunch outside on the patio and laughed a lot. Chandler’s walls were broken down and he had let me in, even confessing to me about a new guy he’d met from Chicago. “We’ve been talking a lot. He’s really sweet, but a virgin.”

“Chandler…not something I needed to know.”

“He’s twenty! Makes me wonder what’s wrong with him.”

I chided, “He could be just waiting for the right guy. Not all gays are promiscuous, and in fact, a lot of us like to have just one guy.”

“I’m glad you think that way. For when, you know, you get a guy.”

“Yeah? Don’t want your dad in a throuple?”

His head spun to me, and his jaw hung, showing the masticated sandwich there.

“Close your mouth, Chandler.”

He finished chewing quickly, swallowed and wailed, “Ewww! Don’t ever put that picture in my head again!”

“So, youdowant to hook up me and your dad.”

“Fuck.”

“Language.”

“Sorry,” he said without a bit of remorse. “I messed up, but don’t tell anyone that I said it. Or that you guessed it. Whatever.”

“Who is anyone? Who all knows?”

“I don’t know. It’s not some big conspiracy.”

“Okay, then, can I ask if your dad knows?”

“Oh, him? He’s not sure what he knows right now, but he’s coming around.”

More cryptic bullshit to decipher. “What the heck does that mean, Chandler?”

Just then we heard the backdoor open and close and he pleaded with his eyes. “Shh, okay?”

I gave him a nod and we both greeted Rick as he came over to us, joining us at the table. “How are things, fellas?”

“Good. You’ll be happy, Dad. I think I’ve decided on Loyola, and I can do e-classes for farm management from another school there, but their business courses are great.”

“Good! I’m glad it’s settled. I’ll look into everything we need for you to attend.”

“I have all that information, Dad, come on,” he sighed, glaring at his father.

“Of course, you do, Chan. How silly of me.”

Chandler got up and said, “Well, I’ll leave you two alone to…talk or whatever.”

Rick laughed at his son then lost his smile when he looked into my eyes. “He’s…pushing me.”

“Me too.”

“I usually don’t let anyone push me,” he said gruffly, then got up from the table, heading into the house. Before he got inside, he called out, “I like to do the pushing. Just so you know.”

As Rick entered the house, leaving me alone outside of it, he left me to wonder what the hell he was talking about. Did he think I was pushing? I didn’t think I was, but maybe he saw it that way. It was possible, with Chandler’s nagging, he thought I was behind it.
