All men loved their kids, of course. Even the assholes in the world had some love for their kids, at least I hoped in my more optimistic heart. It was more for Rick. His entire life had been devoted to being a father. When his second wife left him, he didn’t throw up his hands. He just dove into fatherhood so deeply that he tried to make up for the boys not having a mother.

He was nearly fifty before he let himself think more selfishly, wanting love of his own. I’m sure he was more than shocked when he fell for a man. Still, he hadn’t run from it.

I dressed in a light blue dress shirt and black slacks, found my favorite black belt, and then got on my black sneakers. Rick warned me not to dress fancy, so I hoped I kept it casual. As I was finishing my hair, Chandler knocked on the door and came in to see me looking in the big mirror over the dresser. “My dad is a lucky guy.”

“Thanks, Chan,” I said as I turned. There was sadness in his voice, so I asked, “What’s up?”

“Nothin’,” he said as sat hard on the corner of the bed.

I sat with him and urged, “Tell me.”

“That guy…the one in Chicago I’d been talking to, he just told me he has a boyfriend. They'd broken up when we started talking.”

I understood his outburst earlier the previous day. “I see.”

“Yeah, I know you understand. When we were talking about guys all those times, Kan…this is what you meant.”

“Yeah. Yeah, for all the nice selection of men in the city, you have to realize they have that same selection. Men can be very fickle creatures, especially when we’re young. It’s a good thing, though.”

“How?”

“Now you can go to school and work harder and then play without being tied down to one guy. Date a few, find out what you like in a guy. Your options are wide open, Chandler. Take advantage of these years that you can just be free and have fun.”

“You miss that?”

I laughed as I thought about it briefly. “No. I did that in high school and college. I did up until I got into a committed relationship. It’s fun, it’s free, it’s being young. I know you’re like your dad. I know you think there is this one great relationship out there for you, and there is! I truly believe that, but you are no different than the rest of us. You gotta pay your dues, going out with shitheads, and guys that have no clue what they want. Just be careful, that’s all, Chan.”

Finally getting a laugh out of Chandler, I felt better. “Yeah. Dad is a terrible role model. Him and his starry-eyed love puppy shit.”

“Language.”

“I’m eighteen.”

“You’re living in your dad’s house, and he doesn’t want you cussing. When you’re out of here, cuss like a sailor.”

“Whatever,” he groaned, then hugged me quickly. “Thanks, Kan.”

After Chandler left, Rick knocked on the bedroom door. “Kan? You ready?”

I opened the door, smiling. “I am.”

“You look good. Damn,” he said, then took my hand. “Let’s go.”

I grabbed my coat from the coat tree by the front door, and I saw Rick had pulled his Land Rover up to the walk. “It should be warm.”

“You thought of everything.”

“I tried.”

He opened the door for me, got in and kissed me, and I saw the excitement again in his face. “What do you have planned?”

“Can’t tell you. I want to show you.”

“And the…lifestyle. You said we’d start that tonight.”

“Impatient man, yes, we will start that tonight, too. I’ve been coached and judged by two ruggedly handsome men that told me I’d be a good Dom for you.” He started away from the house and chewed his lip as he thought over his words. “I want that, Kan. I mean, sure I want what I want, and on paper, we’re compatible. Paper isn’t…”

“Rick, I appreciate you worrying, I do. We’re compatible on paper, that is a great start. Do you know how many guys I spoke to at clubs that we thought we were a perfect fit for the night only to find out he wanted to piss in my mouth or something?”
