HELP! DANTE

“Who are you texting?” his voice rings loudly behind me. He snatches it from my hands before I can click off the screen. His eyes flick to me.

Silent moments go by.

“I see. I get it now."

Chapter eighteen

Serpent in the Sanctuary

“Youwillneverloveme how I love you.” he pouts.

“D-dante,” I whimper. He doesn’t bat an eye.

“It’s always an act with you, isn’t it?” His smirk drops almost instantly as he makes his realization. “All these years were a waste of time. My commitment to you meant nothing, and now you want to raise our daughter with another man!?” he screeches.

"She isn't yours!" I scream.

Thatwas a huge mistake.

“You want to be a cheater... if you want to be afucking whore, go ahead, but I won’t let my daughter grow up in these conditions,” he snarls, gripping me by my shirt and dragging me over the couch to throw me on the floor.

He tries to pin me down, but I kick his head and scramble to my feet, trying to run into my room for safety.

Reaching my room, I find myself in a shoving challenge with him.

“Open the damn door!” he screams. I stick my hand through the gap and poke his face, hoping to strike an eye. I don’t know if I did, but I did something because he cried out in pain, allowing me to shut the door and lock it.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

What do I do? There’s nothing I can do! I have to trust that help is on the way and survive long enough to make it out. I scan around the room.

“A barricade,” I say to myself, running over to the bed. Slowly and with great difficulty, I push and pull it in front of the door, which he is still trying to break. Luckily, it isn’t budging. Seeking refuge, I duck into the closet. It's dark, but the lack of sight comforts me, and the banging on the door stops.

Did he leave?Maybe the police arrived?

It doesn't matter to me. Let them find me; this spot is where I'll stay. The silence continues until I hear a loud thud.

What the hell is that?

“Isabella,” he sings. His voice is unmistakable. He makes it inside the room. I can hear him pushing the bed aside. “Where are you?”

I remain quiet. I don’t breathe and don’t think, but it doesn’t make a difference when the closet light flicks on, and his eyes meet mine.

“Found you,” he grips my wrist and drags me against the carpet towards the middle of the room. My arm and leg are red from the burn, and my wrist is aching. From my awkward position on the floor, I notice the door has been taken off its hinges.

“Don’t move,” he demands, glowering down at me. So, I stay perfectly still on the ground.

"Is it true? Is the baby not mine?" he asks.

I answer, "I honestly don't know."

His scornful gaze is intercepted by a tugging frown that makes him appear to be on the brink of tears. “Do you still love me?” he asks.

There isn’t any reason to lie anymore. I shake my head while looking down at the floor like a scorned puppy. He stands motionless, holding back tears and glaring at me like I'm the villain in the room.

“Couldyou love me?” he asks, sniffling and wiping his nose with his sleeve.
