Yuma didn’t appear offended as he just smiled and nodded.

Focusing on the doorbell button, Khan lifted his hand. He saw it tremble, so he clenched a fist, stuck out his pointer finger, and stabbed the button. His finger instantly hurt a little, telling him he’d jammed it way too hard. Khan heard the chime echo through the house, and he felt grateful he hadn’t accidentally broken the button.

That would have been embarrassing.

They waited for a good moment without hearing anything. There was absolutely no sound of movement inside.

Glancing behind him, Khan asked, “Should I, uh, should I hit it again?”

“Absolutely,” Yuma responded with an encouraging grin.

“Then we could try knocking,” Ryan offered from where he leaned against his motorcycle.

Khan nodded and rang the bell again, pushing it a little more gently that time. Again, he received no response. Blowing out a frustrated breath, Khan made a fist and knocked.

When Khan still didn’t receive a response, he turned back to Sam and spread his arms. “Um, now what?”

Hunter stood with his arm slung over Yuma’s shoulders and asked, “And today is his day off, right?”

Sam nodded. “Yes. That’s what Sheriff Anthony said.”

With a hum, Ryan straightened and began jogging around the side of the garage. He came back a minute later. With a shake of his head, Ryan told them, “Bad news. His pick-up isn’t in the garage.” The enhanced human crossed his arms and squinted at the sky. “Any ideas as to where he may have gone?”

“Eh, this early?” Hunter rested his free hand on his hip. “After working several days, most people would spend the morning cleaning, then the afternoon running errands.” He shrugged. “At least, that’s how I used to do it.”

“When he left, he said he was going to find answers on how to clear out the hunters,” Sam stated slowly, squinting at the ground as if searching his memory. The move made the scar on his left cheek pull oddly, accentuating the old mark. “Could he have gone to visit Anthony and he not tell us?”

“Has anyone talked to Anthony since last night?” Ryan asked.

Sam pulled out his phone and dialed the sheriff’s number.

“Hey, Sam,” Sheriff Anthony greeted. With his shifter hearing, Khan easily heard him, especially as Sam had put the man on speaker. “How’s it going? Is Nathan taking everything okay?”

“Last night, Nathan seemed to take things pretty well,” Sam told the sheriff. “He even seemed open to a relationship with Khan, but we’ve run into a snag.”

“A snag?” Anthony’s sigh came through the line loudly. “Isn’t there always. Let me guess. Some sort of miscommunication between Nathan and Khan?”

Sam glanced toward Khan, his expression uneasy. “Uh, something like that. He wouldn’t happen to be with you, would he?”

Snorting, Anthony quipped, “Uh, if Nathan was with me, I wouldn’t have asked how things went last night. I would have already known.”

Lifting his attention to the heavens with a pained look on his face, Sam muttered, “Right, right. Sorry.” He licked his full lips before admitting, “We’re at Nathan’s house, but he’s not here. Think we should wander around town looking for him running errands or something?”

From that comment, Khan guessed Sam was grasping at straws.

“Why don’t you tell me what the misunderstanding was first?” Anthony asked slowly. “I mean, if he’s trying to get relationship advice, he does have a sister an hour away. Depending on how late it was, he may have gone to her.”

“A sister?” Khan squeaked. “He can’t tell his sister anything.”

Sam lifted his hand to stall anymore of Khan’s worried ramblings. “He talked about getting information on how to deal with the hunters in the area.” Eyeing Khan, Sam continued, “Khan freaked out a little about them and ran off last night, so he may be of the mind that to help Khan settle, he needs to deal with them.”

That wasn’t the first time Khan had heard those words, but they still caused him to break out in a cold sweat. He didn’t want his mate anywhere near those types of murdering bastards.

“Well, if he wanted information on possible hunters, he wouldn’t have come to me,” Anthony admitted. “All my information is second-hand. I get it from Declan.”

Sam frowned. “But you have it, right?”

“Aaaand after realizing why I sent him out there, Nathan may have been a little annoyed with me,” Anthony admitted. “Try the alpha. Maybe he’s seen him.”
