“I think that could be arranged. I do have a second date planned for us, whenever you’re ready.”

“It may be a few days, if that’s okay with you.”

“Everything okay?” His tone switches from flirtatious to gentle concern, the warmth soothing to me.

“Yeah, just this stuff with Greg. I’ll get it all figured out in no time.” I hope. “How’s Quinn?”

“She’s absolutely perfect. She is the most beautiful baby in the world,” Isaac declares. “And she’s fast asleep in her crib. I’m getting my stuff moved tomorrow.”

“Moved? Where are you moving to?”

“Kyler and Ashley have been begging me to move in with them. It helps them with the baby, and I get to see her more, and none of us have to go without seeing her. So it’s a win-win for all of us.”

“It certainly is.” The only thing I miss about being married to Greg is seeing my son every day. But there’s no way I could live with him now.

“That’s amazing, Isaac. I’m so happy for you guys. Quinn is going to have the best blended family.”

“We hope so. I’m sure we’ll mess up something else, though,” he jokes.

“I’m going to get off here. It’s time for movie night. But I’ll get with you in a few hours.”

“I’ll be up, I’m sure. Bye, Phoebe.”

“Bye, Isaac.”

I head inside, determined to push aside the worries about real life and focus on quality time with my son for the evening. Whatever tomorrow brings, I’m ready for it, and I won’t go down without a fight.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTENTIONS WITH MY MOM?

It’s been two days, and I haven’t heard from Phoebe. She said she’d text after our phone call, and I stayed up a while and nothing came through, so I went to bed because I knew I’d be up with Quinn. Even the next morning, I didn’t have a missed call. I don’t want to seem needy, but I am worried about her. She seemed to have a lot going on the other night, and while this is still new, I really like her and don’t want her dealing with shit alone.

So I’m making a huge move, which might not go over well, but I won’t know if I don’t try. I ring her doorbell and step back, holding the box of donuts carefully so they don’t slide and smush against one another.

Chance throws open the door, rubbing his eyes. It’s only eight thirty, which doesn’t seem that early to me, but then again, it is summer vacation. Oops.

“Hey, Isaac,” he exclaims, eyes roving over the box in my hand. I wonder if he’s more excited to see me or the donuts.

“Mom’s getting ready. She’ll be down soon.”

As if she could hear us talking about her, Phoebe’s voice rings out from upstairs, echoing toward us. “Is that Jackson?”

“No, Mom. They’re not—Oh! Yes, they’re here,” he calls, eyes glancing behind me now. I turn to see a car in the driveway.

“Who’s that?” It’s probably not my job to ask what Chance is doing—hell, I know it isn’t—but I’m still curious.

“My friend and his family invited me to go to the movies with them. The new Silver Shield movie is out!” he yells over his shoulder “Bye, Mom.”

“Bye. Love you, buddy,” she calls.

“Are you coming in or not?”

“Yeah. Yes.” I clear my throat, stepping into the foyer, and Chance offers me a fist bump.

I respond automatically, deciding that at least he doesn’t despise me.

“So, what are your intentions with my mom?” Chance questions me immediately.
