“Couch is fine,” I agree. “It’s my favorite place to nap.”

“Oh, you and your naps,” he teases me.

We get dressed and then I let him lead me downstairs to the couch. He lays my phone and water onto the table, leaving the television on low.

“I’ve got to make a phone call. I’ll just be right outside,” he tells me and I nod.

“I’m fine, I promise.” I roll my eyes.

Once he’s out of the room, I relax into the cushions, grab my water, and take a slow sip. I barely hit my head; I don’t know what he’s freaking out about. And I meant it when I said the sex was worth it. I’d never been so turned on in my life. All the years I’ve lived in this house, I’ve had fantasies of different places to do things, but Greg always just wanted to be in the bedroom. With me, that is. Most of the time, he’d rather be with his secretary.

I glance around the room, images floating in my mind of different places and positions Isaac and I could try out. We better have a towel ready next time, though. No more slipping.

The front door opens and Isaac appears, followed by Kyler. Well, shit. That’s not embarrassing at all.

“Hey, Phoebe.” Kyler smiles at me as she approaches the couch. She’s got a bag with her.

I narrow my eyes at Isaac. “What’s going on?”

“Kyler is a doctor. She’s just going to check you out, okay?”

“Oh my god, I’m fine. I just knocked the table a bit.”

Kyler opens her bag and pulls out a light to shine in my eyes. I can see I’m not going to win this argument.

“Fine. Fine,” I agree, sitting up again. “Let’s get this over with.”

“Are you feeling lightheaded? Any blurred vision?” Kyler asks as she peers into my eyes.

“Nope, I’m fine. Everything’s perfect.” I sit perfectly still, trying not to blink while she flashes her little light. “I told Isaac it’s just a bump.”

Kyler ignores my protests and proceeds to give me what I’m sure is a full neurological exam, down to seeing how I walk and everything. By the time she’s done, I feel like a plucked chicken.

“She’s fine, Isaac.” Kyler smiles at him reassuringly. “She’s right, just a small bump.”

“Thank you.” I nod at Kyler. “And I’m so sorry to have bothered you for nothing.”

“It’s always good to double-check,” she warns me with a shrewd tone. “You never know. But you’re welcome. Now”—she closes her bag with a snap—“can we gossip a little? Neighbor to neighbor?”

“Sure,” I agree wholeheartedly. “I love gossip.”

“Are you famous or something?” she blurts out.

“Um. No.” I shake my head. My mind travels to Ava’s rock-star boyfriend, and our friend Amber’s billionaire boyfriend. But I doubt anyone knows who I am. I stay out of the public eye. “Why?”

“Well, you know we’re on maternity leave, so I’ve been taking Quinn for a stroll every day around the neighborhood. The past few days, there’s been a car lingering around your house, and when we came in just now, he was pulling around the corner again.”

“Kyler, that’s creepy,” Isaac says. “You didn’t think to mention that before?”

“He’s just been driving through before now. I thought he lived near here or something. But this time, he had his phone up like he was taking pictures. I would have pointed it out, but you were distracted, and I was more worried about making sure Phoebe was okay.”

My mind races, wondering what in the world is going on. “Greg is suing me for full custody. But, I don’t know…”

“What do you think is going on?” Isaac slides onto the couch beside me, covering my hand with his.

“I’m not sure, but I do think I need to hire a lawyer, and unfortunately, Greg’s lawyer works with the best one I know.”

“Who’s the best one you know?” Kyler glances between us.
